The Academy of Television has officially shared its Emmy 2022 calendar, and it has not changed much from last year. The nominations for this year’s Emmy awards will be announced on July 12, which is the same time they were announced in the past. The Primetime Emmys event will air exactly two months later, on September 12.
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will also bring back the Governors Balls to celebrate the Primetime Emmys and Creative Arts ceremonies after the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, taking into consideration the safety concerns that led to the cancellation of the events in 2020 and 2021.
For the first time since the pandemic, the ceremony is set to take place at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles’ LA Live this year. The last time the Emmys were aired by the network in 2018, it was rescheduled to Monday due to the presence of NBC’s NFL Sunday Night Football. As part of the four-network wheel system, NBC has the rights to broadcast the Emmy telecast this year, making it highly likely that the ceremony will be held on a Monday. (In 2020, it took place nearby at the Staples Center, and in 2021, it was held at the Events Deck at LA Live.)
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, based in New York, has partnered with the Arts and Sciences Television Academy to announce a realignment of eligibility for certain series. They are defining what constitutes a “limited series” and making some minor rule changes for 2022, including eliminating the distinction between drama and comedy series based on length of time.
Shows that were broadcasted from June 1, 2021, to May 31, 2022 will qualify for the 74th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards — with the customary “hanging episodes” regulations in place for any TV series that spans across two distinct eligibility timeframes.
Here is the calendar for the 2022 awards season of the Primetime Emmys, subject to change, as always.
