A maternity ward in Oregon is the scene of fatal gunfire

Another hospital staffer was hit by fragments. Bobby Smallwood, the security guard, lay mortally wounded as shots had been fired by the time officers arrived. Sgt. Kevin Allen of the Portland Police said that callers had reported a man threatening hospital workers with a gun, prompting the summoning of Portland Police to Good Samaritan Medical Center on Saturday morning.

The police were concerned about the worst-case scenario.

The Portland Police Bureau stated on Monday that, “Officers thought that there was a chance of an ongoing shooter situation, so they gathered at the hospital from various parts of Portland in a comprehensive citywide effort to handle the shooter, provide aid during a potential large-scale injury event, and remove those who were in danger.”

The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) stated that three police officers were fatally shot by the shooter, who was later found in a van located in the suburban area of Gresham. The officers conducted a search for the shooter and informed patients and workers to seek shelter.

Smallwood, originally from Florida and 44 years old, was taken to another hospital with the highest-level of care trauma, where he later died. He was attended to by the staff.

On Sunday, Rachel Milligan Moreno, his cousin from Brandon, Florida, posted on Facebook, requesting prayers for her family as they mourn the loss of her cousin Bobby Smallwood. Bobby Smallwood tragically passed away while safeguarding the birthing center at a hospital. The devastating news has left us shattered and deeply saddened.

The 33-year-old gunman, known as Jackson Kane Reginald, was previously identified as Calles Kane PoniaX, as reported by KPTV, a Portland TV station.

Allen informed reporters that it is especially tragic that the hospital, known as a place where workers’ health care should be directed, experienced deadly gunfire that Monday. The Oregon Nurses Association said the rate of violence increased alarmingly.

The hospital and healthcare system in Oregon have a responsibility to do everything in their power to protect the safety of patients and frontline caregivers, as stated by the union.

A caregiver who was working the night shift allegedly stabbed a resident of a mental health care facility in Gresham, on July 16th. This is the second time this month that a health care worker has been killed in the Portland area.

Firearms, recreational substances, or alcoholic beverages are permitted. The birth center provides private birthing suites and a video for the birth family. Samaritan Good Legacy is rated as one of the top facilities in Oregon.

The narrator in the video, which displays multiple images from security cameras, states, “We deeply care about your family’s safety.”

The hospital declined to reveal the security measures when asked on Monday, explaining in a statement that the staff members are “profoundly saddened.”

We are focused on providing factual information to those supporting and our employees, deeply impacted by this tragic event, by promising to provide additional information later this week.
