In Egypt, there are over 200 cities and towns, with a population of more than 15,000. However, the main ones that come to mind are the popular tourist attractions or major cities.
Located in the same place as the renowned pyramids, Giza serves as a perfect illustration of this phenomenon as it gradually advances towards the plateau. Instead of relying on more environmentally-friendly land, the vast population growth in Egypt has led to the construction of numerous areas on sandy bases. Among the various oases in the desert, adjacent to the Suez Canal, or along the coastlines of the Mediterranean or Red Seas, the majority of towns have emerged along the banks of the River Nile due to the fact that 90% of Egypt is comprised of desert.
Each province in Egypt is governed by a governor, who is chosen by the President of Egypt, based on the President’s discretion. The highest level of the country’s jurisdiction system, which is comprised of five levels, determines the specific administrative body responsible for making decisions and is further divided into 27 governorates for administrative purposes.
Per square kilometer, although the three most significant (Cairo, Alexandria, and Giza) have a population density of less than two per square kilometer, these governorates have a population density of over one thousand. “Urban” and “rural” are the only types of governorates in Egypt. The official distinction between “urban” and “rural” is reflected in the lower levels of administrative authority: urban governorates do not have regions, or “Markaz”, as these are simply a collection of villages. For instance, in the case of Cairo or Alexandria, only one city may comprise the governorates. Essentially, urban neighborhoods are divided into districts (Cairo has twenty-three districts, while Alexandria only has six).
