Marianna Federal Correctional Institution

Location and Facilities

Marianna Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) is a medium security prison located in Marianna, Jackson County, Florida. Established in 1988, it is comprised of both a male institution and a local minimum security prison camp for female offenders.

The FCI houses a total of 1,065 male prisoners, while the prison camp accommodates 166 female prisoners. The institution consists of five ordinary housing units for the general population, as well as a Special Housing Unit (SHU) where inmates are kept separated from the rest of the inmate population. The camp, on the other hand, has two housing units that provide dormitory-style housing for the female prisoners.

Programs and Education

Marianna FCI offers a variety of programs and educational courses to encourage inmates to work on self-improvement. The Education Department at FCI Marianna provides Adult Continuing Education, GED test preparation and testing, Adult Occupational Education, vocational training, release preparation, and English as a Second Language courses.

In addition, the prison offers a residential drug abuse program and a sex offender treatment program. The Residential Drug Abuse Program is a 500-hour program that enables inmates to be placed in a 180-day residential re-entry center after successfully completing the program. Non-violent offenders with a history of drug abuse may receive up to a 12-month decrease in their sentence upon completion of the program.

Female prisoners incarcerated at the satellite prison camp are assigned to work through UNICOR, which is run by the Federal Prison Industries. All well-behaved inmates, regardless of gender, are welcome to participate in recreation activities such as crafting, TV time, team sports, and wellness instruction.

Notable Incidents

In 2012, several officers and inmates filed a lawsuit against the Federal Bureau of Prisons regarding UNICOR’s computer recycling factory at FCI Marianna. Many prisoners worked at the factory, but long-term exposure to toxic chemicals in the air led to harm for those constantly in that environment. The computers being recycled contained substances like mercury, beryllium, and lead. Although the prison factory remained open, measures were taken to improve safety. However, some officers and inmates remain skeptical about the UNICOR factory.

In the same year, two correction officers, Steven Smith and Mary Summers, were found guilty of smuggling contraband into the facility. They had been sneaking marijuana, tobacco, and cell phones to inmates in exchange for cash. Both officers were subsequently sentenced to prison.

Visitation

Visitation at Marianna Federal Correctional Institution operates from 8:15 A.M. to 3:15 P.M. The FCI allows visiting on Mondays, Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays within these hours. The prison camp, however, only permits visitation on Saturdays and Sundays during the same time frame.

Inmates are granted 10 visiting points per month. A deduction of 1 point occurs for Monday visits, 2 points for Saturday visits, and 3 points for Sunday and holiday visits. Each offender can have up to 5 visitors at a given time, including children.

Prisoners housed in the Special Housing Unit are allowed visitation time, but the visits cannot exceed a duration of 2 hours. If the visiting room becomes overcrowded, visits will be terminated on a first-come, first-out basis. Physical contact with good taste is permitted only at the beginning and termination of each visit.

Any visitor aged 16 and older must have valid photo identification for visitation processing. Visitors are permitted to bring certain items into the facility, including a clear plastic bag no larger than 10″ x 10″, up to $25.00 in one-dollar bill denominations, life-supporting medications, and specific infant care items. All items must be carried in a clear bag.
