Resembling a Nazi Swastika, numerous readers believed that the crossword puzzle released by The New York Times on Sunday coincided with the commencement of the Jewish festival Hanukkah.
No one seemed to be puzzled by the notice. Caitlin Lovinger wrote in her crossword column in the Sunday Times, “I love the geometry in this puzzle, and it contributes to a certain evenness in solving it – so many steps, like climbing stairs.”
However, The Times was heavily criticized by people across the political spectrum on Twitter for what they thought was unclear.
“[W]hy is The New York Times’ crossword puzzle a swastika?” Daily Wire senior writer Ryan Saavedra questioned in a tweet.
Progressive networks previously unconcerned by censorship cry foul over Musk suspending journalists.
“On the first day of Hanukkah, Keith Edwards, a Democratic strategist and Lincoln Project alum, expressed his frustration with the NYTimes crossword puzzle by tweeting, ‘What on earth, @nytimes?'”
He continued to express that he did not think it would be controversial. Personally, I do not believe swastikas should appear in the New York Times, whether intentionally or otherwise.
Sokol Sam, a reporter at Haaretz.Com, tweeted, “I noticed someone without authorization editing. It is bad to do this. I guess I committed a sin, I didn’t intentionally lay out a swastika in the crossword @nytimes, I knew that.”
Blake Flayton, a columnist for the Jewish Journal, tweeted that today’s crossword puzzle in the New York Times is um…Making him anxious.
Today, Sara Luterman, a journalist from the progressive 19th News, inquired if the @nytimes crossword puzzle appears somewhat reminiscent of a swastika or if it is solely my perception.

Biden advisor evades the question of why the president did not visit the border, questioning whether it is the most effective allocation of his resources.
Eric Ortner, a former fundraiser for Obama and Biden, expressed, “#NeverAgain deserves the recognition it is currently lacking. Meaningful conversation and action are deserving of it, rather than having NYTGames @NYT @nytimes staff who may be insensitive to the importance of the issue or intentionally using swastikas.”
Borough Park, a primarily Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn, embodies Kalman Yeger, a Democratic City Councilman, who tweeted about the possible presence of a concealed Happy Chanukah message in today’s @nytimes crossword.
“Former New York Congressional candidate Brian Robinson tweeted that the paper’s friendliness to Jewish people is not how I would describe the crossword puzzle, but it is definitely on the next level of subliminal puzzling for those outside the Jewish community who may be critical.”
