The Phillies shocked the heavily favored Astros with a 6-5 victory, making a strong comeback with the help of catcher J.T. Realmuto. Realmuto not only hit a crucial home run in the top of the 10th inning but also drove in the runs that tied the game in the top of the fifth.
The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Houston Astros with a score of 6 to 5 in the 10th inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, Tucker Martin led the charge by hitting a three-run shot. In the next game, he added an RBI single, followed by Kyle Tucker launching a solo home run in the bottom of the second. The game started in a way that suggested Houston would continue its winning streak and secure the top seed in the American League. This looked promising for their push in the ALCS and ALDS, as they had not lost a single postseason game after sweeping their previous series.
In the top of the fourth inning, the tie game was broken when Realmuto and Hoskins both doubled to drive the ball to the left-center field wall. After a popout by Schwarber, Kyle walked, followed by a double, led by Marsh Brandon. However, the next inning did not go much better for Marsh as Alec Bohm hit a two-RBI double and Nick Castellanos added an RBI single, resulting in a total of four hits. But in the first nine batters he faced, Verlander had set them all down. It was evident that Verlander, who has had his fair share of struggles in the World Series, was cooking.
The Phillies sent Garcia Luis off to homerfield opposite with a 10th inning lead until Realmuto’s home run. The opposing batters were stifled by two strong bullpens.
The Astros were threatened in the bottom half of the 10th inning. Yuli Gurriel put the winning and tying runs on base by walking and Alex Bregman doubled. A wild pitch advanced the runners 90 feet each. Aledmys Diaz grounded out to end the game.
Zack Wheeler will take the ball for the Phillies in Game 2 before the series returns to Philadelphia. In an effort to level the series, Framber Valdez will be the starting pitcher for Houston.
