10 years ago, Jodi Arias’ sensational trial ended in a murder conviction in Arizona. Where is she now?

On May 8, 2013, those who were already camped outside the public plaza of the Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix, eagerly awaited the verdict for the sensational trial that had attracted attention from around the country.

The murder and trial attracted nationwide attention due to the public’s fascination, the prosecutor’s behavior both inside and outside the courtroom, and the explicit portrayal of sex and violence.

Mixed destinies: Here’s the outcome for the main individuals involved in the Jodi Arias trial.

In June 2008, Travis Alexander, Arias’ intermittent partner, was discovered in the restroom of his Mesa residence.

Arias, who was 28 at the time, shot Alexander, 30, in the head, stabbed him approximately 30 times, and cut his throat.

In secret, Jodi Arias testified due to threats and hate mail.

What happened during the Jodi Arias trial?

In 2013, the trial of Arias commenced in the courtroom of Judge Sherry Stephens in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Here are five important moments from her initial trial:

  • Arias claimed that she couldn’t recall stabbing him or slashing his throat. On another occasion, she fired at him in the head when he rushed towards her. According to Arias, Alexander forcefully threw her to the ground after she accidentally let go of his valuable new camera. Prior to his murder, she was capturing images of him while they were both in the shower. Arias asserted that Alexander subjected her to physical and emotional abuse.
  • Phone call recorded explicit content and presented as evidence by her defense counsel. Alexander’s intimate life and the 19 days leading up to his murder were vividly described by Arias while testifying as a witness.
  • Every day, numerous trial enthusiasts queued up to compete for the few available seats. Alexander’s family gathered a group of supporters who filled up the surrounding seats. The trial turned into a spectacle, both on the internet and in real life. Individuals from Europe and other distant places started expressing their opinions on various websites, Twitter, Facebook, and other blogging platforms, as the trial was being live-streamed online and televised on certain networks.
  • Certain individuals declined to give testimony due to their apprehension. Defense lawyers Jennifer Willmott and Laurence “Kirk” Nurmi were largely demonized and even faced death threats. He is currently prohibited from practicing law. The defense claimed wrongdoing on his part, partly because he was observed signing autographs outside the courthouse. Prosecutor Juan Martinez attained a status of adoration.
  • The trial of Stephens was marked by frequent objections from both sides, with Arias, including outspoken witnesses, the crowded courtroom, and the scrappy attorneys, all facing difficulty in containing the media.

Did Jodi Arias get the death penalty?

In that court case, Arias was convicted of first-degree homicide by the jury. However, when it came to deciding whether Arias should receive the death penalty or be incarcerated for life, they were unable to reach a consensus.

In 2015, Stephens announced a hung jury and sentenced Arias to lifelong imprisonment without the chance of parole. Once again, the jury failed to reach an agreement. A subsequent trial for sentencing commenced on October 21st.

Arias is located at the Perryville correctional facility in Goodyear.
