Two men who used weights and prepared meat to catch heavier walleye fish during a tournament in Cleveland last year have been sentenced to 10 days in jail and had their fishing licenses suspended in an attempt to win a nearly $29,000,000 prize.
On Thursday, Cominsky Chase, 36, and Runyan Jacob, 43, were sentenced to a maximum suspension of three years for their fishing licenses, half of the control community years, and one year of incarceration, along with a local 10-day sentence.
As per Michael O’Malley, the Prosecutor of Cuyahoga County, They were additionally penalized $2,500, a portion of which can be donated to a trustworthy organization that focuses on children and angling, and were compelled to give up Cominsky’s vessel, valued at approximately $130,000, which was utilized during the Lake Erie Walleye Trail competition in September 2022.
In March, Cominsky and Runyan pleaded guilty to a fifth-degree felony charge of cheating with the forfeiture of the boat used in the fishing tournament that was seized in October. It is illegal to own wild animals, and they also faced a fourth-degree misdemeanor charge.

This statement, made by O’Malley in 2022, sends a message to the fishing community in Cuyahoga County that convicted felons and thieves are now held accountable. These two individuals should be banned from participating in tournament fishing for life. Although the law only allows a maximum of three years, these two deserve to have their fishing licenses suspended for life. We can only hold them accountable for what they did on September 30, 2022, but there is no doubt that these two crooks cheated in multiple tournaments over the past several years.
According to the prosecutor’s office, an investigation conducted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources revealed that Cominsky and Runyan competed at tournament Trail Walleye Erie Lake in Cleveland, near Boulevard Lakeshore and Road Marginal North, in September 2022.

The office prosecutor would have received a total prize of $28,760 if Cominsky and Runyan had won. The team, which hosted the tournament, consisted of fishermen from several states who were able to catch the five heaviest walleye fish in Lake Erie.
The office prosecutor mentioned that the walleye filets were prepared in various sizes, with some weighing eight ounces and others weighing twelve ounces. Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the walleyes caught by Cominsky and Runyan weighed more than what they appeared to be. Jason Fischer, the tournament director, noticed this discrepancy. As a result, they were promptly disqualified.
