3 UVA football players killed; classes will resume Wednesday

Three football players from the University of Virginia were killed and two others were injured in a shooting that took place on the evening of Sunday at the grounds.

Monday and Tuesday’s classes were canceled, but they will continue on Wednesday, as informed by James Ryan, the President of UVA.

During an 11 a.M. News conference on Monday, university officials announced that Darnell Christopher Jones, a UVA student, was taken into custody as the identified suspect in a manhunt that lasted more than 12 hours, with Chief of Police Timothy Longo of the UVA Police State of Virginia whispering the information to Captain Sr. Timothy Longo.

“Just give me a moment to thank God, breathe a sigh of relief,” Chief Longo said after learning Jones was in custody.

Henrico Police have confirmed that Jones was apprehended without any issues shortly before 11 a.M. In the 5700 block of Edgelawn Street.

Longo mentioned that Jones was being charged with three counts of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, although there is a possibility of the charges being escalated.

WAVY has learned that Jones’ initial court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday morning regarding these allegations.

The order to shelter in place, which was lifted around 10:30 a.M. On Monday, was issued by UVA Police. The shooting, which occurred on Sunday around 10:30 p.M., Took place on the grounds of the university located in Charlottesville. The community was immediately advised to follow numerous alerts through social media and email, with the first alert being issued by UVA Police.

The academic establishment declared that the gunfire took place on a privately rented coach brimming with students, who were returning from a trip to Washington, D.C.

The three students who lost their lives were recognized as Devin Chandler, D’Sean Perry, and Lavel Davis Jr.

All three individuals were part of the soccer squad. The families of all the casualties have been informed.

According to university officials, Perry and Chandler passed away while on the bus. Davis, on the other hand, died at the hospital. Approximately 25 students were present on the bus at the time.

Mike Hollins, a third-year student at UVA and a running back, is one of the two additional players who have been injured and are currently hospitalized, as confirmed by WAVY.

He is not currently listed on the roster. It remains uncertain what his level of participation was with the team, but according to the UVA Athletics website, Jones is included as a member of the university’s football team and it is indicated that he did not participate in any games in 2018.

“Ryan, the President of UVA, stated in a letter that Christopher Darnell Jr., Is believed to be the perpetrator of the shooting.”

Despite not witnessing the firearm, Jones discussed possessing a weapon. This occurred after the Office of Student Affairs received a notification about Jones’ name being brought to the attention of the University of Virginia’s threat assessment team this autumn, as mentioned by Longo during Monday’s briefing.
