According to state troopers, at around 6:30 p.M. On Saturday, Sura Reyes, aged 24, collided with a crowd of approximately 75 individuals who were present at a daylong community fundraiser in Nescopeck. The event aimed to gather donations following a devastating residential fire that claimed the lives of ten members of a single family and thirteen canine companions last week.
In the nearby city of Berwick, Reyes is alleged to have fled the vicinity solely to establish another site of criminal activity by striking the group, resulting in the death of a woman who was 50 years old.
According to Enterprise Press, police received a 911 call from a local resident just six minutes after the car crash occurred. The caller reported that a man identified as Reyes had crashed his car into the caller’s vehicle after assaulting a woman with a hammer and threatening to harm him.
That woman was identified in the charging papers as Rosa D. Reyes, the mother of Reyes.
As stated in the charging documents, Reyes collided with his mother using his vehicle and subsequently proceeded to strike her in the head with a hammer approximately four or five times. Reyes was apprehended at the location and subsequently provided a statement to law enforcement.
Allegedly, he said that he was tired of fighting with his mom over other issues and money and wanted custody to be done with, while in police custody.
According to police documents charging allegedly Reyes, he felt extremely frustrated as he drove his car from Berwick to Nescopeck where she lived. Earlier on Saturday evening, he had a fight with his mom. Detectives have not explicitly said if they believe Reyes intentionally drove into the crowd of mourners, but they did offer some insight.
He drove past a local bar and noticed a group of community members standing in the parking lot, so he circled back before hitting the gas and plowing into them.
Reyes had been in a previous altercation with his mom on Dec. 26, 2020, that resulted in an assault and harassment charge.
According to a report from the Berwick Police Department and court records, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months of probation. During an argument, Reyes snatched the cell phone from his mom’s hands and hit her in the face with it, cutting her nose. He then turned the phone’s battery off.

At Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, four injured individuals were in critical condition, while three of the 17 people injured were in fair condition and being evaluated for their conditions at the hospital. Another three patients had either been treated and released or were taken to other hospitals.
