‘Whose house? Our house!’: Justin Jones calls for House Speaker to resign after gaining seat back

While the crowd chanted, “Whose residence? Our residence!”, Justin Jones (D–Nashville) spoke to hundreds just outside the Historic Metro Courthouse.

Within the courthouse, the leaders of Nashville resisted.

Councilwoman Delishia Porterfield stated, “Our representative was expelled when voters, our voters, were silenced, resulting in an egregious assault on our democracy and a witnessed miscarriage of justice in Davidson County, which had over 70,000 residents.”

Porterfield, who was Jones’ former political opponent, helped to send him back to the statehouse by nominating him for his old seat.

Porterfield expressed, “We’re not going back to protecting democracy by cutting costs. I also wanted to send a civil message. We both ran for the community that we love. There’s no reason we can’t work together to fight for what’s right.”

In spite of the absence of any arrests or injuries, Tennessee’s House Speaker drew a parallel between the incident and the January 6th insurrection. The focus of the special meeting revolved around Jones and was held subsequent to his removal from his House seat for disrupting the session in order to advocate for gun reform.

If Sexton Cameron, the Speaker of the House, does not inform me about what this is and why it is escalating to the level of expulsion, then what does?

After four days, the mayor of Nashville demanded a shift.

Mayor John Cooper said that it is now the right time to vote unanimously to move the Metro Council forward. I call on this governing body to vote and give their voices back to the people. Let’s not delay any further and let’s move on from the past week where their voices were taken away.

“Our community residents are highly capable of choosing their representative and their desire should never have been undermined,” stated Porterfield.

The unanimous decision from the Metro Council was greeted with applause, as Porterfield and Jones embraced.

Throughout the entire journey, chants and applause resounded. Jones marched alongside hundreds of people from the courthouse to the Capitol steps.

“The Tennessee Three will forever remain connected to the community,” exclaimed Councilwoman Sharun Hurt.

Odessa Kelly stated, “To ensure that Justin Jones rightfully takes his seat, we must commence this movement by electing him back into office.”

“This is not the decision of Sexton Cameron Speaker, but the ultimate power lies with the people of Tennessee. Jones moved through a full crowd of supporters, stating that the power of the people is all about power.”

At the Capitol’s staircase, the crowd burst into cheers as he took the oath. His supporters chanted for him, while he returned to the house.

Jones declared, “As I address the audience, I extend my warm greetings to the individuals returning to the citizens’ abode. Within the tranquility of stillness, the mistreatment of this assembly will be prevented, ensuring that any unfair assault on democracy will not go unopposed. Alongside the residents of Tennessee, I have arrived at this place to show solidarity with my fellow constituents.”

There is now a fresh appeal for action, demanding the resignation of Speaker Sexton.

Jones stated that they forgot that people were watching and that they had ultimate authority, but no one was paying attention to that fact. He thought that if no one was watching, he could abuse his power without consequences. He believed that his actions on Thursday would go unnoticed.

Jones, stated on Monday that this confirmation signifies that he is “on the correct course.”
