Alex Murdaugh was ‘fidgety’ when he visited his mother on night of Maggie and Paul’s murders

According to his caregiver, Alex Murdaugh appeared ‘restless’ when he visited his elderly mother on the evening of his wife Maggie and son Paul’s homicides.

According to Muschelle ‘Shelly’ Smith’s testimony, on June 7, 2021, between 9pm and 9.30pm, Murdaugh sat next to his mother Libby, who is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s, restlessly moving and occasionally glancing at his phone, in front of the jury.

During the evening of the homicides, he spent approximately 30 to 40 minutes with his mother. The caregiver shed tears while recounting how he arrived at his parents’ residence three days afterward and explicitly informed her.

She later expressed her concern about the contradiction in the conversation her brother, a police officer, had told her. Smith mentioned that he only recalled being there for 15 or 20 minutes because it made her ‘anxious’.

Prosecutors say Murdaugh, 54, shot Maggie, 52, and Paul, 22, shortly after 8.49pm at the family’s hunting lodge in Islandton, South Carolina.

At 9.06pm, he ignited his Chevrolet Suburban and drove to his mother’s residence in Almeda, approximately 15 minutes away. At 10.07pm, he dialed 911 after alleging he discovered Maggie and Paul deceased. Subsequently, he went back to his own abode.

The government implies that this might have been an attempt to ‘create a false alibi.’

Smith informed the jurors that Murdaugh appeared at his mother’s place wearing a T-shirt and shorts. It was noted that he had never visited before and that he arrived later than expected.

Based on a Snapchat video shared by Paul at 7.56pm, Murdaugh was donning a formal shirt and trousers earlier in the night. Nevertheless, Smith claimed she did not observe any bloodstains on him.

When police officers arrived, he was also dressed in a fresh T-shirt and shorts.

Smith stated in court that a few days after the killings, Murdaugh went to his parents’ residence at 6.30am, which she described as ‘unusual’.

A blue jacket, covered in firearm residue, was discovered at Murdaugh’s parents’ residence. According to her statement, Murdaugh was holding something blue in his hand that appeared to be either a tarp or a jacket.

Regarding the discussion, Smith mentioned that she subsequently phoned her sibling, a law enforcement officer from South Carolina, to seek guidance. Murdaugh informed her that he had stayed present for a duration of 30 to 40 minutes on the evening of the homicides throughout this visitation.

While visiting, Murdaugh inquired about her forthcoming wedding and suggested that he could assist her with the expenses.

The prosecution interrogated Smith about whether she had witnessed a tarpaulin or a coat.

Defense Attorney Jim Griffin inquired if the blue tarp, obtained from Murdaugh’s parents’ residence, was the item the witness had observed and if she had indeed witnessed it. Smith affirmed that it was indeed the same item and concurred with the attorney’s statement that it could not be mistaken for a rain jacket.

It was crucial whether the jacket was a raincoat or a tarp when establishing. The defense objected to the residue of the gun being covered by the latter jacket because it provided evidence. Prosecutors say they did not prove any link between the client and the clothing item because of the objection to the evidence of gun residue on the jacket. The objection was overruled.

Griffin also inquired about Murdaugh’s demeanor on the evening, ‘Does he usually appear restless?’

Smith replied, “Yes.”

This morning, Judge Clifton Newman ruled that the scion’s defense cannot use the financial crimes of Murdaugh as admissible evidence in his double-murder trial.

The judge approved the prosecution’s motion because it is crucial and necessary to provide context, as the crimes are intricately linked and serve as an explanation for the complete story.

‘Hannibal stood by the entrance.’ Additionally, during the trial’s last three days, seven witnesses from the state were summoned in the absence of the jury, with the aim of presenting explosive evidence to establish Murdaugh’s control over the escalating situation.

The murders and the fiscal misconduct have “no rational correlation,” contended the defense in their battle to withhold that evidence from the jury.

Judge Newman stated that the jury has the right to contemplate whether the apparent despair of Mr. Murdaugh, due to his severe financial circumstances and the possibility of being exposed for the crimes he was subsequently accused of, led to the perpetration of the alleged offenses.

Jurors will commence listening to the proof of his monetary offenses on Tuesday.

Murdaugh tried to ‘bully’ attorney suing him for his son’s fatal boat crash

Mark, the attorney for the family of the teenage girl who was killed in a boat crash under the influence of alcohol by Paul Murdaugh, had heard about it earlier in court.

Paul and his father were facing a wrongful death lawsuit over the boat crash which killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach in February 2019.

Tinsley explained that Murdaugh asserted his financial insolvency and mentioned that a hearing to enforce the alleged perpetrator to reveal his monetary resources was scheduled merely three days prior to the tragic murder of his wife, Maggie, and Paul.

Murdaugh, a chronic opioid addict, would arrange to hire a hitman in the following three months to shoot the head of a life insurance fraud scheme gone wrong.

In Judge Newman’s ruling, it is now inadmissible to use the testimony of Tinsley, one of the seven witnesses who provided evidence during the trial, due to the absence of the jury.

Previously, he remembered how Murdaugh had attempted to “bully” him into withdrawing the legal action.

During the trial for the murder case, Harpootlian, who is serving as Murdaugh’s defense counsel, mentioned that he encountered the suspected perpetrator at a charity gathering held in 2019, which was organized in honor of either state senator Dick Harpootlian or US senator Lindsey Graham.

Tinsley informed the court, ‘I believed we had a friendly relationship’, he declares, ‘Hey buddy, what’s this I’m hearing regarding the comments you’re making?’ And he approaches me closely and moves towards me.

Tinsley stated that he understood this as an effort to ‘frighten me and coerce me into withdrawing.’.

The attorney said that the Murdaugh family had substantial wealth and made a firm with that money. Tinsley then told him that Murdaugh was broke in November.

“There was no possible way that he could be financially struggling, as he is actively resolving major lawsuits,” he remarked.

Tinsley said it became a matter of professional integrity for him to seek as much money as possible for the family beach, trying as much as possible.

Paul informed the court that he had purchased alcohol using his older brother Buster’s identification. He admitted to being careless by permitting his underage son to operate his boat while under the influence of alcohol. He acknowledged that the evidence against Murdaugh was incriminating.

If he simply received the insurance funds without actively pursuing justice against Murdaugh, it would create the perception that ‘there was some sort of manipulation at play.’

‘For a considerable amount of time, Alex believed there was a conspiracy going on,’ Tinsley added.

The lawyer expressed surprise [among legal professionals] that I would hold Murdaugh personally accountable.

He submitted a request to urge Murdaugh’s attorneys to present evidence to substantiate his assertion that he was financially depleted.

Tinsley mentioned that he was initially ‘blocked’ and later Murdaugh’s attorneys submitted an objection to his request.

Shot dead were Maggie and Paul before three days – June 10 hearing to compel Murdaugh to disclose his finances was scheduled.

Consequently, the hearing was delayed and never rescheduled.

Tinsley stated that he quickly realized that if Alex was indeed the target of a vigilante, the case against him would be resolved swiftly.

‘When the hounds are at the door for Alex Murdaugh, violence happens’: How prosecutors convinced judge to allow evidence of Murdaugh’s financial crimes

“According to prosecutor Creighton Waters, Alex Murdaugh experiences violence when faced with imminent danger, such as when Hannibal is approaching the gate or when the hounds are at the door.”

He told the judge the evidence was essential for jurors to understand the defendant was ‘out of options and out of time.’.

The speed at which he had been living in the money was absolutely astonishing. In a very short period of time, the $792,000 vanished. He had no more choices left. Waters mentioned that he was spending money extremely quickly.

‘And he consistently needed to attain more wealth to evade the impending consequences.

“He has a significant amount of leverage in the debt. When he asked about the financial conditions and fees associated with it, the evidence will be shown on a specific date, June 7th, 2021.”

‘And he is compelled to perform these actions to remain ahead.’

The evidence was significant as there existed a ‘balance’ between the two instances of aggression that revolved around finances. He contended that Murdaugh hired a contract killer to shoot him in the head 12 weeks subsequent to the murders of his spouse and child.

But defense attorney Jim Griffin said: ‘Your honor there is no logical connection and it does not lead to evidence of motive.’.

He informed the judge, ‘There are no concrete evidence, it is all mere speculation, there is nothing to be obtained, there is no monetary benefit.’

He dismissed the notion that murdering his wife and son would assist Murdaugh in escaping scrutiny.

CFO at Murdaugh’s firm confronted him about $792,000 he stole on day of the killings

On Thursday, Jeanne Seckinger, who held the position of CFO at Murdaugh’s company Peters Murdaugh Parker Eltzroth and Detrick (PMPED), was summoned to testify as the state compelled the judge to remove the jury during the time of the homicides.

She retold the story of how she had confronted Murdaugh about the $792,000 that was missing on the day of the homicides.

“It was a gaze that I had never received from him previously,” Seckinger communicated to the court. “He glanced in my direction and uttered the words ‘what do you desire at this moment?’ While casting me a disdainful expression,” he was propping himself against a filing cabinet outside his place of work.

Seckinger stated that they advised him to enter his office. Furthermore, she continued by informing him about her suspicion that he had actually obtained the funds that were owed to the law firm for the aforementioned case.

‘That would be stealing,’ if not, all fees went directly to the legal firm in their line of work, the CFO explained.

‘While conversing as friends, the discussion between the duo and Randolph III, the ailing father of Murdaugh, revolved around his declining health. Seckinger mentioned that Murdaugh reassured her about the availability of funds and his ability to acquire them – he subsequently proceeded.’

Later that day, prosecutors claim Murdaugh murdered his spouse and child.

Seckinger stated that, consequently, her inquiries to Murdaugh regarding the misplaced funds stopped instantly.

‘Alex was distraught and troubled and nobody wanted to bother him about it,’ she informed the court.

Furthermore, the scheduled hearing in the civil lawsuit faced by Murdaugh and his son, regarding a deadly boat collision, was called off. It was in the month of February 2019 when Paul, while intoxicated, crashed his father’s boat resulting in the unfortunate demise of Mallory Beach, who was only 19 years old. Additionally,

Nevertheless, Seckinger stated that partners at PMPED carried on with private discussions regarding the undisclosed funds.

PMPED discovered a string of burglaries committed by Murdaugh between 2011 and 2012, targeting the Badger family following the tragic death of their mother, Donna, in a collision involving a UPS truck. Apart from the $1.2m he received as legal fees, Murdaugh allegedly embezzled an additional $1.3m, according to the investigation.

In order to address the matter, a decision was made on September 2, 2021, for Murdaugh’s sibling Randy and business associate Lee Cope to have a private meeting with him.

Murduagh is reported to have confessed to the theft and immediately stepped down.

This occurred 12 weeks following the killings of Maggie and Paul.

Two days afterwards, it was revealed that Murdaugh had been shot.

Seckinger stated that she was being transported via helicopter to the hospital in Savannah, and he was wounded in the head on the side of Old Salkehatchie Road in Hampton when an individual from the emergency services notified her that Murdaugh had been boating with her family.

Anxiety was her immediate response. She informed the court, “Was this reprisal? Was he implicated in something larger that was going to jeopardize more of us?”

In a failed life insurance fraud, the rightful successor confessed that he orchestrated a contract killer to fire at him – however, it is widely known that the court did not receive additional proof regarding the incident.

By the roadside, he asserted that he had compensated his relative Edward Smith to fire at him, verifying that he had remunerated his relative Edward Smith to shoot him in an attempt to enhance his trustworthiness, medical documents disclosed by his legal group in October 2021.

He desired for Buster, his surviving son, to receive a payout on his life insurance policy in a manner that would resemble a drive-by shooting.

Murdaugh survived and dialed 911. Initially, he claimed that he had been murdered in a drive-by shooting.

When the firearm discharged, Smith asserted that he had no involvement in the suicide scheme and was attempting to prevent Murdaugh from taking his own life – who is currently facing charges for the occurrence.

Murdaugh’s former best friend tells how the alleged killer admitted stealing from his firm and confessed a 20-year opioid addiction

In court Thursday, the state called Murdaugh’s close friend and colleague Chris Wilson. The jury were also not present for this evidence.

Murdaugh shared the same sentiment, according to Wilson who believed that he was Murdaugh’s closest confidant. Wilson further mentioned that they were not only classmates in law school but also forged a deep bond and became inseparable friends.

Waters inquired: ‘Do you currently feel that way?’

‘I’m unsure of my current emotions, Mr. Waters,’ Wilson expressed, his voice faltering.

Wilson collaborated with Murdaugh on the case involving the vanishing of $792,000 in legal expenses.

This prompted the inquiry by the legal firm, PMPED.

Wilson stated that Murdaugh confessed to stealing money and being dependent on opioids for two decades.

Wilson informed the court on September 3, 2021, that Murdaugh, the attorney from Cope Law Firm, had been involved in the embezzlement of money.

He met with Murdaugh at his parents’ residence in Almeda.

I was also mad. I had a long yearning for the guy I loved, and I still probably love him a little bit, but I was extremely mad.

Wilson grew increasingly emotional as he noticed his friend’s life descending into chaos, and he didn’t know how to intervene or inform the court.

‘He had been taking money that he informed me.’ He confessed that Murdaugh had ‘frightened me.’ He had mentioned ‘scaring a lot of individuals.’

Wilson later discovered that Murdaugh had been shot in the head.

‘During his testimony, Wilson expressed his perplexity by questioning, ‘What on earth is happening?’. ‘I believed he had attempted suicide.’

Although Murdaugh has made contact, Wilson has not communicated with him since.

One of the texts sent to Wilson said: ‘So sorry for the havoc I created. I’d do anything to make it right.’.

The trial is taking place at the Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro, a sleepy rural town 50 miles west of Charleston in the low-lying region of South Carolina, where the Murdaugh family wields immense political and judicial power.

Before it was removed ahead of the trial, a portrait of Buster Murdaugh Jr.’S late legendary grandfather, a longtime Solicitor for Circuit 14th, hung on the wall in the courtroom where Murdaugh faces judgment.

Prosecutors have stated that Murdaugh allegedly killed his wife and child in order to distract from his alleged financial crimes and to generate sympathy, arguing that it makes sense.

He has adamantly insisted that he was not the killer, despite discovering the bodies of his youngest son and wife at multiple times.

He illicitly obtained close to $9 million from clients and other lawyers, and now confronts over 100 extra criminal accusations, spanning from narcotics smuggling to allegations arising from the trial for homicide.

Prosecutors allege that Murdaugh enticed his spouse and offspring to their expansive 1,700-acre hunting retreat and fatally shot them.

The government also asserts that his life was spiraling out of control amidst years of opioid dependency and mounting financial obligations.

The blockbuster trial in June is expected to include wild allegations of a dark family with excessive pleasure-seeking and financial misconduct, but Murdaugh has not pleaded guilty.
