IONIA — Alex Courts observed the cost of eggs beginning to increase last autumn.
Courts, the overall manager of Ken’s Farm Market in Ionia, wasn’t worried at the time — but that altered.
Courts remarked, “Alright, this is slightly unconventional,” at that moment I thought, ‘Once (prices) reach a specific threshold, which is actually the highest we’ve ever witnessed — around the middle to end of autumn in (2022) –.'”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index, the average cost for a dozen Grade A eggs in the U.S. Increased by $4.25 in December 2022, which represents an approximately 237 percent rise compared to the price of $1.79 in December 2021.
Why are prices so high between the toss-up of an avian flu outbreak and higher production costs, with more than 43 million hens laying eggs reported to have died since the beginning of the outbreak in February 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture?

Nancy Barr, the executive director of Michigan Allied Poultry Industries, stated that there are multiple factors influencing the cost of eggs in Michigan. They distribute their eggs in an open market, where prices fluctuate on a daily basis. She emphasized that farmers have no control over determining the price.
She stated, “(Effects on the market) consist of inflation, supply chain, and labor expenses, which affect everyone,” additionally mentioning that Michigan egg producers are extremely responsive to the price of fuel, which directly affects the expense of feed and packaging.
Budget-conscious consumers who are seeing big spikes in beef prices are choosing to buy eggs, which are still the lowest-cost protein option available to Americans, at statewide grocery stores.
Barr emphasized that the well-being and welfare of birds under the care of farmers is of the highest significance.
Barr stated, “In order to ensure safety and health protocols, it is crucial to raise prices. Our farmers need to remain vigilant and continue practicing biosecurity tactics to prevent a large outbreak like the one in Michigan, where more than 40 million egg-laying hens were killed due to avian flu.”
Additionally, there is the transition towards manufacturing eggs from hens that are not kept in cages — a practice that is pricier.
The judiciary declared, “At a certain juncture, a substantial twelve eggs were priced at $5.” Ken’s Farm Market in Ionia expressed concern that customers might be displeased with the increased prices.
“It truly maintained that trajectory throughout the late autumn, into the festive season, and into the new year,” he stated.
$3.99 per twelve were accessible during the week of January 9, revealing the availability of cage-free jumbo eggs. Furthermore, Courts mentioned that they have also investigated the market for cage-free eggs, and the company has discovered certain brands that offer superior worth.
“It’s been really good for us, it’s been (good) for our customers and it’s provided a little value for us,” Courts said.

Kraus informed the station that typically, she sells eggs for $7-$8 per dozen, but emphasized the excellent quality of the product.

Kraus stated that we are aware of the care taken for our chickens, and we know what we feed them because the eggs found in the store should be more expensive and honestly, they should be better… Those eggs are fresh from a farm.
The municipality of Zeeland, located in Ottawa County, began exploring a shift in response to the increasing requests for allowing residents to keep pets that produce food, including bees and chickens, after seeing an increase in prices and the pandemic.
It’s uncertain when egg prices will go back to normal, but there has been a decline since the beginning of 2023.
