Because He Lives

And life is worth the existence simply because He is alive.

How delightful it is to embrace a newborn infant.

And experience the sense of pride and happiness that he brings.

However, even sweeter is the tranquil confidence.

This child may encounter unpredictable days due to His existence.

Through His existence, I am able to confront the challenges of tomorrow.

Due to His existence, all apprehension has vanished.

Since I am aware that He holds the future,.

And life is worth the existence simply because He is alive.

And then someday I’ll traverse the river.

I will confront life’s ultimate battle with agony.

And then as mortality gives way to triumph,.

I’ll witness the brilliance of glory and I’ll understand that He exists.

Through His existence, I am able to confront the challenges of tomorrow.

Due to His existence, all apprehension has vanished.

Since I am aware that He holds the future,.

And life is worth the existence simply because He is alive.

The Story

Many of you may be familiar with the Gaither Homecoming Series, a series of videos, recordings, and concerts held by Bill and Gloria Gaither. As someone who is a big fan of Christian hymns, praise songs, and gospel music it thrilled me when these videos were released, and I wanted to get every one. There was just a simple joy in watching the videos, sort of a throwback to the old revival meetings and “All Night Sings” from a simpler time. Some of the earlier videos from the 1990s feature great singers of the past like Jake Hess and Vestal Goodman whose voices are gone now, but whose voices have been preserved for posterity. The Gaithers are still very much active today in music ministry; if you’re lucky enough to live in an area where they hold concerts, the Gaither’s Web site has a listing of upcoming concerts and homecoming events.

The media began to promote immorality and drug use was prevalent in the culture, especially during the sexual revolution. It seemed like the country was abandoning God on a large scale, rather than turning back to Him. The late 1960s were a time when the country was torn apart by war and racial tensions, and it feels like our world today is just as chaotic, if not more so. Coincidentally, I was born in the same year, 1969, when Gloria and Bill Gaither wrote “Because He Lives,” a song that resonated with many during that time.

When my child grows up, what kind of world will they be entering? That is the terrifying question all parents ask, including me, as I bring my child into this world. The Gaithers were facing their own struggles, both emotionally and physically, at the same time.

The words to this hymn came out of this. They reminded us of how much greater God’s love is towards us, as our heavenly Father. Just as parents feel the same love and desire to protect and care for their children, God’s love towards us is even greater. When Benjamin, their son, was born safe and sound, their love for him flowed out of their hearts and they held him in their arms, conquering all their fears.

In this personal and heartfelt song, our family has found assurance even in times when our direction has shifted and our fortunes have changed. Many years have passed since we first embraced this song, and it continues to remind us that the resurrection of the Lord is the central truth of our lives. Because of this truth, we can face tomorrow with gratitude and love for each other. The author of the hymn, Robert Morgan, shared the stories behind the song in the book “Resources for the Righteous” as told by Gloria Gaither.
