On Friday, the Biden administration declared that it would automatically pardon $39 billion in student loan obligations for 804,000 borrowers.
Borrowers receive forgiveness for any outstanding debt from the government after making payments for either 20 years or 25 years, depending on when they borrowed and their specific loan and repayment plan. This relief is a direct consequence of adjustments made to the income-driven repayment options within the student loan system.

As per the Biden administration, previous records did not include payments that were supposed to bring the borrower closer to becoming free from debt.
U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona stated that the system is broken and borrowers have fallen through the cracks for far too long, failing to accurately keep track of their progress towards forgiveness.
The Biden administration counted payments for borrowers who had temporarily stopped making payments in specific deferments and forbearances, as well as those who had made only partial or delayed payments, in order to bring people over the line for forgiveness.

Persis Yu, deputy executive director at the Student Borrower Protection Center, stated that while the loan forgiveness is a significant triumph for borrowers, it brings them the much-needed respite they deserved.
In a statement, Yu declared, “Do not misunderstand — more than 804,000 individuals are benefiting from this measure due to 804,000 shortcomings — and this is merely the beginning of the problem.” “Hardworking individuals have been adversely affected by an ineffective student loan system.”
The announcement of the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down President Joe Biden’s comprehensive plan for student loan forgiveness, which would have provided relief to approximately 37 million individuals, comes weeks after.
The Department of Education will inform qualified borrowers in the upcoming days.
