A fiery weekend highway collapse in Philadelphia on Interstate 95 led to the closure of a section of one of the busiest traffic routes along the U.S. East Coast. As crews cleared concrete debris from the site, human remains were discovered on Monday from the fallen overpass. This incident occurred on June 12.
The authorities do not know exactly how the fuel was ignited. On Sunday, a gasoline-hauling tanker truck caught fire, causing the section of I-95 to collapse and buckle to the concrete. This happened after the shut down of the section in both directions.
According to a statement, the state police mentioned that a corpse was retrieved from the debris and handed over to the Philadelphia County Medical Examiner for identification while excavation teams worked to remove rubble from the location on Monday.
According to WPVI-TV, Nathaniel Moody, the truck driver, was missing right after the accident occurred.
During the morning commute, local traffic reporters said that motorists should heed the warnings and consider taking alternate routes or using public transportation, as bumper-to-bumper traffic was observed near areas of potential road closures and congestion.
According to KYW News Radio traffic reporter Justin Drabick, at approximately 8 a.M. EST (1200 GMT), he stated, “As we enter the peak of rush hour, it is evident that the situation is deteriorating.”
He observed that Mondays typically had light traffic. “Tomorrow will truly be the ultimate test.”
Investigators and workers spent the early morning and afternoon surveying the damage as they stood on the section of the highway where an excavator clawed through massive pieces of concrete and moved rubble.
Officials said it would take several months to rebuild the main north-south segment of I-95, running from Miami to the Canadian border along the East Coast highway.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated that the federal government was collaborating with Pennsylvania to repair the highway.
Buttigieg expressed, ‘This will cause significant upheaval in that area.’ He remarked, ‘Certainly not days. I’m referring to a longer period if it takes weeks.’ He did not provide a specific timeline for resolving the issue.
According to Karine Jean-Pierre, spokesperson for the White House, the head of the Federal Highway Administration intends to pay a visit to the location. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting an investigation.
Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania issued a disaster declaration on Monday to free up federal funds to help rebuild a portion of the highway that is used by 160,000 vehicles daily.
He also encouraged residents to seek alternative routes, utilize commuter trains, or work remotely from home.
UPS (UPS.N) and FedEx (FDX.N) stated that they were making modifications.
Buttigieg mentioned that the department planned to make use of funds for emergency assistance to support the reconstruction efforts, but did not disclose a precise financial amount.
He expressed, “This is not solely regarding commutes — it also pertains to the supply chain.” He mentioned that the closed portion of I-95 serves as a significant pathway for the distribution of goods.
According to Andy Herrmann, a former president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, bridges are not designed to withstand the heat that could reach up to 1,090 degrees Celsius (2,000 degrees Fahrenheit) from a fire truck tanker. It is common for incidents like these to occur.
Herrmann stated that discussing the potential collapse of Sunday’s bridge prompted a conversation about changing requirements design, but it was challenging to see how the U.S. Could afford to upgrade the numerous overpasses in the country.
