Can you dig through an aquifer in Dwarf Fortress?

In Fortress Dwarf, you can do everything by digging in aquifers. But here’s everything you need to know: even experienced Fortress Dwarf players should skip embarking on an aquifer, as they pose world-spanning menaces that can prevent fortresses from being built. In the real world, aquifers are fairly benign sediment or rock formations that hold groundwater. However, in Fortress Dwarf, aquifers are more than just annoying – they are nothing short of a nuisance.

The answer is yes, you can do it, but it’s not easy. There are only a few ways to mine through aquifers in the Fortress of Dwarf listed below, and none of them are simple.

The freezing method

Even on dense water reservoirs, the issue of obtaining ownership can be effectively resolved and in a highly reliable manner. The stronghold can be inundated or dwarves can be carried away or perish in the water reservoir, but this approach entails significant risks. Prior to the arrival of summer, you can essentially anticipate the freezing of the water reservoir, excavate through it, and substitute the icy barriers with stone or wood in frigid environments. H2O solidifies and water reservoirs consist of water.

The cave-in method

Essentially, you’ll need to create a cave-in to penetrate the aquifer. The main concept is to collapse the layers of dry dirt into the aquifer, replacing the aquifer tiles. In order to achieve this, you’ll require multiple layers of dirt, soil, clay, loam, and other similar materials above the aquifer.

To start, use a chisel or a lever to remove the tiles, causing the floor to cave in. Connect the floor to the surface by constructing a single floor and finally plug the hole. After that, dig out the entire area beneath the “plug” to create a wide 5×5 area at minimum. Begin by digging stairs down to reach the aquifer.

Pumps

The pump system is the most secure and dependable (and least enjoyable) approach to excavating through aquifers. You can construct screw pumps and transport the water from the aquifer into an elevated reservoir. This process is rather intricate and time-consuming, but it will successfully navigate you through the aquifer.

It’s important to note that all of these methods necessitate initial setup on the surface. It’s advisable to establish defenses and prepare in advance before delving into an aquifer.
