Carolyn Bryant Donham, the white woman who was born in Indianola, Mississippi in 1934 and is infamous for her role in the murder of Emmett Till, the African American civil rights movement and protests were also influenced by the incident in which her half-brother J.W. Milam and ex-husband Roy Bryant kidnapped, tortured, and murdered Till.
On August 24, 1955, a 14-year-old black boy named Till went to Bryant’s grocery store and church in Money, Mississippi. Additionally, Roy and Donham ran a small market and meat grocery store called Bryant’s.
“How about going on a date, sweetheart?” Till asked as he handed over the cash for the bubble gums he had come to purchase. Subsequently, Carolyn testified that the boy had approached her, flirted with her, and even made threats while she was at the cash register. It was later revealed that Emmet was abducted and murdered on August 28, 1955.
Neither Roy nor Emmet, the man who was convicted of a crime and spent time in jail, was ever kidnapped when he was sleeping at his relative’s place at 2:30 in August. In fact, he decided to take revenge and planned to kill the young boy, his step-brother, after hearing this story from his ex-husband.
In 2007, the octogenarian confessed in the novel “The Blood of Emmett Till” by writer Timothy Tyson that she had concocted the majority of the narrative. Furthermore, she also verified that her statements during the trial were false, as Carolyn Donham confessed on January 26, 2017.
