Cientos de incendios forestales en los Territorios del Noroeste de Canadá generan evacuaciones en lo que las autoridades llaman una “situación de crisis”

The capital city of Yellowknife is facing a danger as fires consume areas of the Northwest Territories of Canada, resulting in authorities issuing evacuation mandates and declaring a state of emergency. Numerous wildfires have prompted these actions.

According to Shane Thompson, the Minister in charge of Municipal and Community Affairs, more resources are being allocated to assist the over 230 areas affected by intense fires in the Northwest Territories. This has led to a state of emergency.

Thompson stated in a press release, “We find ourselves in a situation of crisis, and we are using all available tools from our government to help.”

The fires emerged as some areas were issued an evacuation order followed by a state of emergency declaration by the mayor of Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories.

In a statement on Wednesday, officials from the Northwest Territories said that the cities of Ndilo, Dettah, and Ingram Trail are also under evacuation orders. The authorities added that those who are unable to leave these areas by road can sign up for evacuation flights starting on Thursday.

  • The authorities stated in the press release that other residents have until noon on Friday, August 18, 2023 to evacuate. The residents residing along Ingraham Trail, in Dettah, Kam Lake, Grace Lake, and Engle Business District are currently at higher risk and should evacuate as soon as possible.

Over the weekend, a substantial part of the South Slave area, which includes Hay River, was subjected to a mandatory evacuation order following the issuance of new evacuation directives. The local authorities announced on Facebook that the roads connecting Hay River to the Alberta border and towards Yellowknife were likewise shut down.

On Wednesday night, the Northwest Territories Fire Department said that the fire will reach Hay River tonight. It is expected that the strong winds have brought the fire within 10 km of the community. They are moving away for their own safety and relocating the teams that were in the path of the fire to assist in other areas.

According to Northwest Territories Fire, a Canadian government agency, a group from Alberta is utilizing fire-resistant material in the Hay River region to aid in halting the expansion of the fire.

“Once the agency was incorporated, the remaining operations will persist to function as soon as circumstances permit it, while the sprinklers and structure safeguards are implemented and activated.”

  • The forest fires in Canada put nearly 60 million residents of the United States under air quality alerts.
  • Initially, Slave South advised Grande Prairie to evacuate the evacuees, while a new center in Albert St. In Alberta redirected them to the Northwest Territories Government.

Until Wednesday night, a total of 236 fires were actively burning in the Northwest Territories, authorities said.

The air quality alert from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency was issued on Thursday and Friday as the intense fires in the USA resulted in dense smoke moving towards the south.

The National Meteorological Service warned on Wednesday that smoke from forest fires in the Northwest Territories of Canada is moving south through central Canada and towards Minnesota. This Thursday, a strong cold front will bring this smoke to the entire state.

The weather service stated that the haze might reach the boundary between Minnesota and Canada by midnight this Thursday and potentially advance towards the Twin Cities around noon, and southern Minnesota by 3 p.M. On the same day.

The smoke will start to dissipate and disperse as the winds shift to the southeast on Friday afternoon. Air quality should improve below alert levels by the end of this Friday.”
