Baseball history witnessed one of its greatest milestones when Babe Ruth, hailing from Mobile, Alabama, overcame serious racial tensions and death threats to set a career record of 714 home runs. This iconic record stands as a testament to his 39 years of unwavering perseverance. However, it is important to recall that his record was eventually surpassed by Roger Maris, who hit 61 home runs in 1961, with the support of the Yankees team. In 1961, Maris also chased the record for the most home runs in a single season, ultimately capturing it with 61 home runs. During a time when people were not allowed in the ballpark due to the scandal surrounding the Black Sox in the 1920s, Babe Ruth’s record-setting home runs helped to save the sport of baseball. Reflecting on Babe Ruth’s impact on the game, one can truly appreciate the magnitude of his influence.

Hank Aaron’s Illustrious Career

Hank Aaron’s career home run record of 755 stood for 33 years until Barry Bonds smacked his 756th home run in the 2007 season. Many still view Aaron’s achievement as the true king of baseball, despite Bonds’ ties to Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs).

He is still holding the record for the most RBIs in a career, with a total of 2,297 runs, and it has been 39 years and counting. Additionally, he hit a minimum of 20 home runs in every single year, until his 21st season in 1974 when he broke that record. He is also the third highest in hits in MLB, with a career total of 3,771 hits spanning over several years, and he is also part of the 3,000 hit club. Apart from his career home runs, which is a total of 755, Aaron Han also has other impressive accomplishments.

Hank Aaron, a good hitter, never struck out more than 90 or 97 times in a single season, making it his highest total strikeouts. He was also voted to the MLB All-Star Game for 21 consecutive years, from 1955 until 1975. Additionally, Aaron finished in the top 5 for the MVP Award seven other times and won the National League MVP Award in 1957.

Hank Aaron was named as one of the greatest living players, along with Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, and Johnny Bench, after playing his last game with the Milwaukee Brewers almost 40 years ago on this day. Aaron’s legacy still lives on in baseball.

Collectors especially value his 1954 Topps rookie card, as it represents what the sport meant to him and his remarkable legacy, making him a highly sought-after player.

Rarity In High Grade

It is almost impossible to find a high-graded example of his rookie card due to the obvious fact that the card has been played with, passed down, traded, and collected by youngsters for over 60 years. Anyone who really likes baseball and baseball cards, including fans and collectors, must draw a fascination towards the existence of this particular card. The fact that there is only one rookie card ever printed and put into circulation by Topps in 1954, featuring the well-centered image of Hank Aaron’s Hammerin’, makes it even more desirable for collectors.

The fact that only 23 examples of rookie cards for Hank Aaron have been graded by PSA, with only 10 reaching a Mint Gem 10 threshold, shows how rare it is to come across an example in mint condition. This is why they are highly valued, as they stand out when compared to others. Additionally, the Topps 1954 set produced cards that were larger than the standard 3-1/2″ by 2-1/2″ size, measuring at 3-3/4″ by 2-5/8″. If the card was not protected well enough, it could have wax or staining from the packs. There could also be printing defects such as miscuts, issues with centering, dots, and roller marks. Even if you were to pick up a card straight from a pack, it may not be in the best condition, as the printing process for baseball cards is not perfect.

Market Value

In the past decade or so, there has been an increase in high-quality instances of the realized value, which is the reason for this. In 2012, a PSA 10 instance was only sold once and fetched an exorbitant amount of $357,594.00 through SCP Auctions. Between 2006 and 2010, an instance of PSA 9 was sold 8 times, with prices ranging from $17,000 to $29,000. However, for the next three years, no more mint examples were sold. In 2013, one instance was sold for $36,023.70, which was $8,000 higher than the previous peak. The following year, in 2014, the hobby was amazed once again when another PSA 9 instance hit the auction block and sold for an astonishing $62,140.00 – a remarkable 72% increase in just one year! Even earlier this year, a new record was set for a PSA 8 instance, which sold for $21,600 through REA – $4,600 more than its previous highest price.

PSA has included the Hank Aaron rookie card on their esteemed “Mount Rushmore of Baseball Cards” – and deservedly so. Among numerous enthusiasts, the Hank Aaron rookie card is widely regarded as one of the essential additions, if not the ultimate addition, to any collection (provided one can afford a Mantle or Ruth rookie card).

What has caused such an increase and spike in Aaron’s rookie card? It is now the right time to slow down and take a closer look at the vintage market, where the investment factor and examples of high-graded rarity and great player appreciation are all at an all-time high.

If you make the move to the right, you will have a chance to land this card in an auction, if you are a collector. It will only increase in value, as it has over the last couple of years. In the years down the road, it will be the first one to enter circulation. Everyone wants to be the one to get their hands on it. During his 23 years in baseball, Aaron had 255 different cards coming from Topps Company, which is about 100 years ago.
