Did Jackie Witte, Paul Newman’s First Wife Ever Remarry?

Jackie Witte did not remarry after her divorce from Paul Newman in 1958. She remained single until her death at the age of 64 in 1993.

Despite both of them getting married at a young age, Jackie led a life that some individuals may perceive as lacking fulfillment due to her short-lived union with Paul. However, regardless of this fact, there was no public announcement of her passing and the reason behind Jackie Witte’s death remained undisclosed.

Jackie Witte Became Paul Newman’s Wife in 1949 and Had 3 Kids for Him

Within a few months, the Woodstock Theatre Company successfully secured their relocation to Chicago, Illinois. After settling in a small town, the young couple met for the first time during their summer stage work. They got married shortly after, on December 27th, 1949.

Jackie and Paul Newman became the fifth members of the Newman family in 1954 when their youngest and third child, Kendall Stephanie, joined the family. A year after their wedding, Susan Newman, their second child, was born in 1953. They named their first child Newman Scott.

The Couple Changed Careers so Their Marriage Could Thrive

During the years of childbearing, Paul and Jackie made a lot of sacrifices to balance their budding careers with their growing family. When Jackie had their first child, Paul almost gave up his career in theatre. Later, when their father died and they moved to Cleveland, Ohio to manage the family business, Jackie was the one who almost gave up her budding career in theatre, this time with their first child.

Despite not being successful in acting, Paul Newman almost dropped out of Yale University, where he was studying for his master’s degree, to venture into academics with the assumption that he could at least become a lecturer in the theater. Meanwhile, Jackie Witte, who was pregnant with their second child, decided to put her own acting career on hold and became a full-time model. She frequently visited New York via train in search of modeling jobs, perhaps as a less demanding pursuit compared to her acting career.

In 1953, Paul had already gotten acquainted with Joanne Woodward, a fellow theatre performer named Joanne Woodward. It turned out that he met her in the theatre. Even Jackie’s constant pleas couldn’t help Paul make time for his family, and it couldn’t save their marriage either. However, Paul’s marriage suffered from his constant absence due to his blossoming acting career. Eventually, Paul decided to quit his studies at Yale University and ventured into full-time acting instead. After trying for a year, he eventually called it quits and focused on his acting career in New York.

Jackie Witte and Paul Newman Divorced in 1958

It became apparent that Jackie, at a young age, had married and lost the man she loved. Perhaps it was this loss that made her bond with her new partner, whom she affectionately called “bae,” and they had plenty of time to party together. Instead of being in the arms of Woodward Joanne, Paul would have preferred to be away from his wife, Jackie, who was his family. However, all of this worsened when Paul landed a role in a film in Manhattan, which would have taken him away from his wife. Unfortunately, the birth of their third child, Newman Stephanie, could not save their already deteriorating marriage.

Jackie had completely devoted herself to taking care of her three children, and she had distanced herself from Paul to make this decision. She was able to meet her motherly duties and had decided to completely give up on acting, as she felt that she had enough work of her own raising her children.

The same year that Joanne and Paul Newman relocated their family from Connecticut, they got married. Reluctantly, Jackie Witte signed the divorce papers in 1958, as requested by Paul Newman. However, it was clear that she was hoping to win him back, as she was pregnant with their child at the time. Paul Newman admitted to being in love with another woman and decided to spend the rest of his life with her.

Meet Paul Newman and Jackie Witte’s 3 Children

Allan Scott Newman, Susan Newman, and Nell Newman had three children, specifically Paul Newman and Jackie Witte, during their brief nine-year marriage from 1949 to 1958.

Like the majority of his family, Scott, who was a stuntman, was already following a path as an actor before his passing. Consequently, his passing was due to an unintentional overdose of drugs and alcohol on November 20, 1978. Stephanie Newman, the youngest, was born in 1954, while Susan Newman was born on February 21, 1953, in New York City. Their first child, Scott, was born on September 23, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1977, Susan pursued acting in her father’s film, Wedding A, before venturing into film production. She also starred in films like Slahot and played roles in her father’s films. Stephanie Newman, Susan’s elder sister, was once described as a “farmer-writer-painter” and she seemed to be interested in maintaining the family’s legacy in Hollywood. Perhaps she chose to pursue other careers in painting, writing, and farming.

Jackie Witte is Survived by Her Two Daughters

To honor Paul Newman, a documentary called The Last Movie Stars was created by the HBO Max series, celebrating his wives Jackie Witte and Joanne Woodward, as well as their children. However, Paul is survived by his second wife Joanne Woodward and their three children Nell Newman, Melissa Newman, and Clea Newman. On the other hand, Jackie Witte and Paul Newman’s two remaining biological daughters, Susan Kendall Newman and Stephanie Newman, continue to carry their legacy. Sadly, Jackie passed away in 1993 at the age of 64, while Paul lived until the age of 83 before succumbing to his deteriorating health caused by lung cancer in September 2008.
