At present, at the very least, the omnipresent expression for publishing on the platform he presently refers to as X is here to remain, but Elon Musk may desire to dispatch “tweet” back to the avian creatures. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) —
To repost it, you still click on “retweet.” Compose a post, you still require to click on a blue button that displays “tweet” to publish it. For one, the term is still prominently displayed throughout the platform previously recognized as Twitter.
However, it is much more than just that.
If the owner of Twitter, who also happens to be one of the richest men in the world, even makes a declaration, it can upend more than just a top-down order. With his “tweets,” Twitter has become a verb and implanted itself into the lexicon of the world and America, accomplishing in just a few years what few companies have done in a lifetime.
“The true story of ‘Hatching,’ as stated by author Nick Bilton, is about Betrayal and Friendship, Power, and Money in the origins of Twitter. You cannot decide to get away from it, as it cannot be transformed, controlled, or created. Language has always been derived from the usage of people.”
The iPhone was introduced in 2007. During the platform’s release and when SMS messaging was extremely popular, it was called “twttr” – without vowels, which was the prevailing style in 2006. Twitter did not initially begin as Twitter.
Bilton stated, “when he acquired the URL for twitter.Com from a bird lover,” Evan Williams, co-founder of Twitter, “decided to go ahead and buy the vowels, two vowels for a total of $7,500 each.”
Bilton remembered that “I’m going to tweet this twitter” – people didn’t tweet, it started at the beginning. Then, in the Twitter office in San Francisco, the first tweet took over soon and got people talking, but it didn’t go viral.
Throughout his time as president, ex-President Donald Trump’s inflammatory utilization of the social media platform swiftly propelled the term “tweet” into almost constant media coverage. Individuals who never registered for Twitter became familiar with the definition of the word. We have been posting messages on Twitter for more than ten years. Global leaders, famous personalities, sportsmen, individuals opposing oppressive regimes, individuals engaged in propaganda, individuals involved in the sex industry, and revered religious figures, as well as popular meme creators and even royalty, all participate.
“Searching on Google.” For “tweet” like language, the term used in social media networks, there are no other platforms that allow users to post their thoughts or messages in the form of short updates. Unlike television programs and news stories that embed tweets on their sites, tweets are not frequently deleted, although there might be instances when they are removed. Additionally, users can quote and retweet tweets, and even after retweeting, we can still tweet. This is the current situation.”
“Tweet” was included in The Oxford English Dictionary in 2011. Merriam-Webster incorporated it in 2013, and The Associated Press Stylebook introduced it in 2010.
Jack Lynch, an English professor at Rutgers University who specializes in the study of language history, stated, “Being included in the dictionary signifies that individuals are already utilizing it.” He further mentioned that dictionaries typically exercise caution and hesitancy when it comes to incorporating new words, particularly related to emerging phenomena, as they aim to avoid fleeting trends.
Musk has enforced the X, unlike the Amazon up-turned-arrow grin — just as the blue bird symbol brings about a smile, its amiable brand representation persisted as Twitter expanded into a worldwide communication platform and grappled with false information, internet trolls, and offensive language.
Martin Grasser, who was hired for the logo redesign in 2011, created a bird logo for Twitter that was not the first but has stood the test of time. At the time, he had just graduated from art school two years prior.
He said, “The brief was exactly that. They wanted Nike and Apple to be on par with it, but we weren’t starting completely over, so they knew they wanted a bird.”
Twitter introduced Grasser’s concept in May 2012; the corporation went public on Wall Street subsequently in the same year.
Jack Dorsey, another co-founder (and former CEO) expressed a desire for something more straightforward. He described the initial design as unconventional, resembling a dragon or a flying goose with a tail, according to Grasser, who showcased the early in-house design.
The bird symbolized a vision of Twitter as a welcoming space “where everyone can participate and converse,” Grasser explained.
He stated, “We desired to imbue it with the concept of soaring.” “The circular shape evokes a feeling of hopefulness, with the bird even appearing somewhat uplifted, as clichéd as that may sound, I believe it sets it apart from a bird descending or remaining level.”
The term “Twitter” itself is playful, just like “tweet.” This was not a coincidence, Bilton mentioned.
Other titles that emerged as the platform launched included “Status” and “Friend Tracker.”
The winning idea had Noah Glass, another co-founder who never quite got the credit he deserved for his role in hatching Twitter.
“And he immediately realized that was the moment,” Glass, Bilton expressed, “had been contemplating like heartbeats and sentiments. He was experiencing a divorce and he literally examined the dictionary term by term until he stumbled upon the term twitter.”
Bilton expressed, “It was about connecting with your loved ones and friends. It was an emotional experience, and it felt inviting. One of the founders, who possessed emotional intelligence, understood that this was about connecting with humans.”
It came as no surprise that the company rebranded to X. Soon after taking over the company in October 2022, Musk began his quest to erase Twitter’s corporate image and culture in favor of his own vision. He upended policies, auctioned off décor and furniture, and saw voluntary departures as well as layoffs and firings, resulting in the loss of three quarters of the company’s staff.
Musk, rooted in his ambition to pursue nearly a quarter-century ago, began to create a digital one-stop shop called X.Com to provide banking services, process payments, and handle investments and loans. This rebranding of Twitter’s aims to build on his previous success, selling his first startup, Zip2, to Compaq, and marks his transition into the finance industry.
He does not mention his young son by the name of X. X-branded products, such as SpaceX and Tesla’s Model X, are currently declining in popularity. Musk has not given up on his dream of dominating Twitter.
X.Com is essentially still like a blue bird, even as other playful tidbits start to disappear. Although he has given few details, his goal for X is to turn it into an app that encompasses everything, including messaging, payments, photos, and videos. Twitter.Com remains a contextual synonym of X.Com at present.
Bilton stated, “I think it’s still true that X or Twitter rings. There was a company inside Twitter that used to say it couldn’t kill itself.”
“I think that it’s kind of become a fabric of society. And even Elon Musk may not be able to break it.”.
