Father of July 4 Highland Park shooting suspect has been charged with 7 felonies

A man from Illinois, who is the father of an Illinois man, has been charged with seven felony counts for the reckless conduct of shooting and killing seven people at a mass shooting in a suburb of Chicago on July 4th during a parade, prosecutors announced on Friday.

According to Eric Rinehart, the State’s Attorney of Lake County, Robert Crimo Jr.’S gun license application in 2019 was endorsed by Crimo. Rinehart stated that Robert Crimo Jr. Turned himself in to the authorities on Friday and a bond hearing has been scheduled for Saturday. The charges stem from Crimo supporting his son’s application when he was 19 years old.

Rinehart stated, “Parents and caregivers are in the optimal position to determine whether their adolescents should possess a firearm.” “Regardless of the evidence he obtained and his awareness of Jr. Crimo Robert’s involvement in the failed justice system, he supported his son in this particular lawsuit,” Rinehart’s son sponsored.

Authorities have previously said that Robert Crimo III, the accused shooter, attempted suicide by machete in April 2019 and was accused by a family member of making threats to “kill everyone.” What led his office to file charges further discussing Rinehart this week?

Both those reports were published months prior to Crimo Jr. Endorsing his son’s application in December 2019.

The attorney, George M. Gomez, from the Chicago area, sent an email statement describing the charges as “unfounded and unparalleled.” In a phone conversation on Friday, Gomez stated that he was representing Robert Crimo Jr. In the recently disclosed criminal case but chose not to respond to inquiries.

Gomez’s statement stated, “these charges are absurd and we will fight every step of the way. The Attorney of Lake County, State’s Attorney, who knows exactly what is going on with their 19-year-old children and actions taken in the past three years, can hold single parents criminally liable. This decision should alarm every United States single parent.”

In this nation, the lawyer referred to the accusations as “politically driven and a diversion from the genuine transformation that must occur,” however, Gomez stated that Crimo Jr. “Still empathizes and feels remorseful for the individuals and families who were harmed and experienced the loss of their loved ones.”

Highland Park experienced a tragic incident during a beloved holiday event, where several people were injured and seven lost their lives. As a result, Robert was indicted by a grand jury in July for 48 counts of aggravated battery, 48 counts of attempted murder, and 21 counts of first-degree murder.

Until Friday, Rinehart had declined to discuss whether the parents of the man could potentially face charges related to the homicides.

Legal experts have said that it is rare for a guardian or parent accused of being the shooter to face charges because proving such charges can be difficult.

In a notable exception, the parents of a teen accused of fatally shooting four students at his high school in Michigan last year have filed charges of involuntary manslaughter against them, stating that the trial date in January has been delayed by the court.

Authorities previously stated that the Illinois State Police reviewed Crimo’s application for a gun license in December 2019 and did not find any reason to deny it, as he had no criminal record, no arrests, no serious mental health issues, and no other behavior that would disqualify him from receiving protection orders.

According to a police report obtained by The Associated Press, public records indicated that Crimo III had a “record of previous incidents” where he tried to commit suicide using a machete in April 2019, after the incident at the parade shooting.

In September 2019, the police received a report from a family member of a member of the Crimo III that they had a collection of knives and had threatened to kill everyone.

The disagreement regarding the presence of violence was contested by both Crimo III and his mother. Subsequently, investigators informed Robert Crimo Jr., The father, that he was the owner of the knives, which were subsequently returned by the authorities.

Robert Crimo Jr., A longtime resident of Highland Park, is the father of a well-known convenience store operator in the city where he once ran for mayor. As he entered the courtroom, shackled and greeted by his son, he nodded in recognition, a familiar face in the Highland Park community. Over the course of this year, Robert Crimo Jr. Has been present at several pretrial hearings.

Junior Crimo Robert said in media interviews that he did not believe he did anything wrong and did not expect to face any charges for helping his son get a gun license through the established state process.
