Ferret health care coverage in the United States: What are your options?

There are many cases of chronically ill ferrets being surrendered to ferret shelters because their owners cannot handle the financial burden of caring for them. Treating and managing these common major illnesses in ferrets, such as lymphosarcoma, insulinoma, adrenal disease, and dental problems, can be quite expensive and can bring increased health risks as ferrets age, just like humans. A ferret that is six years old is considered elderly and a four-year-old ferret is considered middle to late aged, so as they get older, they require more frequent and important annual wellness checks, just like us. When it comes to our fuzzy family members, there is no difference. Everyone knows that healthcare bills for pets can easily accumulate over time, especially in the United States.

However, what about our ferrets? In terms of healthcare coverage, there are numerous choices available in the United States for dogs and cats. Ferret owners may encounter unexpected and expensive events when visiting the veterinarian. These are circumstances that are not suitable for ferrets, as nibbling on objects can result in intestinal blockages and falls from elevated areas can occur. Accidents can happen, and ferrets, being small and fearless, have a knack for fitting into the most peculiar places.

Pet Assure

Week 7 is a seven-day period during which they can be contacted. To speak to one of their customer service representatives, you can call the number 1-888-789-7387. You can also set up a membership for Pet Assure by visiting their website at www.Petassure.Com. It is important to note that not all veterinarians honor this discount card, so members need to make sure they are using a participating veterinarian to receive the discount. Some companies offer Pet Assure membership to their employees at a discounted rate, which can further lower the membership prices. The cost of the membership for one pet is $199 annually or $21.95 per month. For two to four pets, it is $149 annually or $16.95 per month, and for five or more pets, it is $99 annually or $11.95 per month. There are no waiting periods, and the membership can be used immediately after it is set up. However, certain services such as grooming, nail trimming, or home flea prevention may need to be done in the office, while any blood work or medication analysis may need to be sent out. The Pet Assure membership card is presented in the office every time a medical service is performed, allowing members to receive a 25% discount on each visit.

Nationwide

The waiting period for a Nationwide insurance policy to become effective starts at least fourteen days after the policy is established. Any qualified veterinarian may be utilized to provide healthcare services as they operate on a reimbursement basis. After each veterinary visit, a claim is then submitted to Nationwide for reimbursement, while the ferret owner remains responsible for paying the full bill. Nationwide operates on a reimbursement basis. Ferret owners now have two options for insurance coverage: the Avian and Exotic Pet Plan or the Whole Pet with Wellness plan. Previously, only one plan with limited coverage was offered until this year. Nationwide is the sole company in the United States that provides health insurance coverage for ferrets.

The date of termination for this particular plan will become unavailable at an unknown time, as informed by the Nationwide agent whom I spoke to. During the term policy, there is a maximum available amount for reimbursement, which is listed for diagnostic tests and covered disorders. However, this plan does not cover the care or diagnosis of a ferret that develops adrenal gland disease or insulinoma. Additionally, it does not specifically list coverage for any kind of splenectomy or any type of endocrine hyperplasias, malignant or benign tumors, or the surgical correction or medical management of any endocrine conditions. It also does not cover teeth cleaning, vaccinations, flea prevention, wellness checks, or pre-existing conditions. This plan has a $50 deductible per veterinary visit for a single ferret, and the price per ferret becomes $11 for the first ferret, $11.50 for the second ferret, and $11 for each additional ferret up to four. If there are more than four ferrets, the price per ferret becomes $12 on a monthly basis. The Plan Pet Exotic and Avian offered by Nationwide is the cheapest coverage option for exotic and avian pets.

This plan does not have a cap on what it will reimburse during a term policy. There are also three different amounts of reimbursement available to choose from: 50%, 70%, or 90% of eligible services. Under this plan, you have the choice of a $250 deductible per term policy or a $100 deductible per term policy. Services such as flea prevention, vaccinations, teeth cleaning, and wellness checks are covered, but pre-existing conditions are not covered in this plan. Nationwide’s Whole Pet Wellness plan offers the most coverage and became available for ferrets this year.

This diagram shows the monthly expense per ferret for the plan with a $100 deductible.

1 Ferret 2-3 Ferrets 4 or more Ferrets
90% Reimbursement $33.85 $32.26 $30.66
70% Reimbursement $27.48 $26.21 $24.93
50% Reimbursement $21.11 $20.15 $19.20

This graph shows the monthly expense per ferret for the $250 deductible scheme.

1 Ferret 2-3 Ferrets 4 or more Ferrets
90% Reimbursement $29.08 $27.73 $26.37
70% Reimbursement $23.66 $22.58 $21.49
50% Reimbursement $18.25 $17.44 $16.63

Agents are available from 3:30 AM to 7 PM Pacific time, Friday through Monday. If you are interested in healthcare coverage, you can contact Nationwide at 1-800-874-5607. The costs of the policy may slightly vary depending on the state in which the policyholder resides, and Indiana residents are given specific policy costs.

Final thoughts

Bringing a cheap pet ferret into your home is not advisable. It would be wise to stash away some money in your budget to cover the costs of caring for your ferret, including medical expenses. This will enable you to provide care for your ferret and bring you peace of mind, whether it’s for unexpected or routine medical bills. Being able to financially support your ferret as a forever parent will bring you peace of mind, knowing that you have the cash on hand to pay for any medical expenses that may arise.
