The adventure of the Hill family, which is both a part of their overall family business and a way of life, has become a great storytelling success online. With 441,000 viewers, their YouTube channel, White House on the Hill, continues to share the rural story of Becky and Jake’s farm, which now includes a multitude of chickens, cats, pheasants, peacocks, ducks, and emus.
“What emerges from such a large egg?” In the video, with a whopping 7.5 million views and counting, some of their YouTube videos have achieved stardom. They have established a household name on their YouTube channel by posting a new video every three days, showcasing their homesteading journey (taking a glimpse into life at the White House on the Hill). This has all taken place during their time in the St. Joseph-region, with their three sons and the couple becoming a well-known presence in the area.
Continuing to spread the message and inspire others who enjoy living vicariously through the lifestyle of those who live on their own White House on the Hill, the “I Love Chickens” brand carries plenty of merchandise and engages in speaking engagements, agricultural/homesteading trade shows, and television podcast interviews. Their calendar is filled with events that include specialty industries like emu, duck, and peacock, as well as urban farming and poultry sectors. They receive online questions and fan letters, showcasing how popular their online presence has become and how they are now connected with major advertisers through their association with the White House on the Hill.
Aviary already have plans to add different types of fencing to their building and livestock. The family’s plans also include buying their own farm recently. They enjoy tree-climbing and have some old-fashioned woodworking skills. They are also interested in home renovations, growing their own food, and homemaking. The family’s combination of efficiency and inventiveness helps them overcome challenges on the farm. The high-quality videos they produce make it easy for non-farm viewers to see how they solve these challenges. They even have a special place on their farm to honor the passing of a beloved life. They also celebrate new life, including the interesting hatching of many eggs, especially with the arrival of their youngest son. The popularity of the White House on Hill may be due to its complete sense of farm realness.
They commenced their journey with a small number of chickens acquired from a nearby farm store. In search of a more uncomplicated way of life, they decided to lease a farm close to St. Joseph. Eventually, they sold their house and grew weary of the frantic pace imposed by multiple work schedules and childcare responsibilities. During the initial decade of their marriage, they resided in Kansas City, and for the majority of their lives, they had been city dwellers. Jake and Becky first crossed paths while studying at Missouri Western State University. What truly makes the White House on the Hill narrative genuine is the family’s grounded attitude towards the realization of their dream.
The couple had already been designing palette gardens, gardens in containers, and elevated bed gardens at their previous residence. Additionally, she longed for a garden and enjoyed tending to animals. Becky, who had previously resided on a farm, had a sense of how their ideal vision might appear.
Jake had to learn everything from the beginning. “Once we acquired our initial chickens, he was captivated,” says Becky.
Becky says, “We began with modest beginnings, and it required a substantial amount of time. Establish outdoor areas for gardening. Try out different approaches with the area you possess. Be open to acquiring knowledge, studying, and investigating. Familiarize yourself with the regulations regarding animals in your locality. We viewed numerous online videos about homesteading.”
It’s perfectly fine to derive pleasure from this way of living on a hobby or part-time basis as well. “Determine whether you desire to possess property, and what your aspirations entail. Be ready to acquire knowledge about your individual talents, and be receptive to various environments and opportunities,” he affirms. As mentioned by Jake in a Farmstead Talk video, understanding your true desires is crucial.
There are plenty of creativity and fun in Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, as they showcase mini-vignettes and images that represent their lives. For example, there is a recent video showing baby chicks dressed in homemade Chiefs jerseys, demonstrating the creativity and fun. Additionally, there are videos of building a chicken coop, catching bees, and even running with emus. Not to mention, there are also selfies with peacocks.
Becky states, “Keep in contact with us through the video remarks, we answer to everything!” And encourages viewers to engage alongside them. The White House on the Hill refers to their existence as a voyage.
It’s unusual but quite attractive. There are three little boys and an online community that feels more like a sense of freedom than just going around. Somehow, amidst the chaos of raising animals and dealing with the busyness of food, everything works out.
