Your first trip with shrooms will be as enjoyable and stress-free as possible if you take the time to properly prepare and consider important factors such as setting and dosing. If you’ve already had some positive experiences with shrooms, you’re likely eager to get started, but remember that this is your first time tripping with shrooms.
Set and setting
The two most important factors that will affect your mushroom trip are the setting and set, referring to the external and internal environments. This concept was introduced by Timothy Leary back in the 1960s.
Having a residence with an exclusive backyard or garden, encompassing both indoor and outdoor areas, is ideal to possess when you’re traveling because the allure of the natural world can be particularly captivating. It will be convenient to fulfill your physical requirements for water, snacks, and restroom breaks in a location that is neither excessively chilly nor excessively warm, and where you’ll be in proximity to various establishments and individuals. Your surroundings define your ambiance.

To ensure the safety of everyone in your group and make sure they feel secure, it is important to plan ahead and discuss boundaries. Similarly, it is not recommended to choose camping spots in wilderness areas or public parks for your first time, as emergency services may not be easily accessible and getting lost can be a concern. Additionally, it is best to avoid overly remote or crowded environments, such as festivals and concerts.
If you’re a parent and you’re sure to have a sober caregiver to separate your kids in a space, it’s a good idea to let people know that you’ll be unavailable for several hours on the airplane mode on your phone for the duration of your trip. The demands of the outside world may feel jarring when you’re tripping, so cultivating a mood can help intentionally choose lighting and music. You might also want to gather some items beforehand, such as a pen and journal to jot down insights and ideas or explore your creativity, incense, crystals, instruments, fabrics, or fun textures, and art supplies, to help you see new things and enhance your senses with shrooms.
Make sure that you are well-rested and hydrated, and that your body is in a good state of well-being before you begin your trip. It’s best to eat a light and healthy meal a few hours before taking shrooms, so that you are neither hungry nor full. This includes affirming your willingness to learn from the openness and self-acceptance that mushrooms can bring, as well as considering your intentions, expectations, and past experiences. Also, take into account your emotional and mental frame, as well as your current mood.
Currently, I am in the process of seeking answers. I feel the need to explore these questions, which is why I consider this experience. Many explorers choose to pre-journal before their trip to help them feel prepared and grounded. Spending time in nature, doing breathing exercises, meditating, or practicing yoga are activities that might be beneficial. Taking a little time to center yourself in whatever way is most helpful can be very beneficial.
Consider Asking Someone to “Trip Sit” or Guide You
Start trial clinical here, here, or here to locate a highly supportive environment for a clinical trial. Begin here, here, or here to locate a clinical trial with facilitators who are trained in creating a highly supportive environment. It’s a good idea to vet their perspective and experience, especially if you don’t already know the person. You may also be able to locate therapists or psychedelic guides through your personal network or the internet. If it’s your first time taking shrooms, you may want to ask someone to shepherd you through the experience to ensure your safety and trip.
Alternatively, you can ask a trusted friend to be a sober trip sitter, whose presence is reassuring and compassionate throughout the duration of your trip, and who can help keep you safe physically.

Tripping on Shrooms Isn’t Necessarily for Everyone
If you have any conditions following the ingestion of shrooms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider who is preferably knowledgeable about the subject. Many people have positive experiences with psilocybin shrooms, which can inspire intense psychological and emotional effects.
Although it is important to keep in mind that this is just a brief list, there is still quite a lot of emerging research on the potential contraindications if you are breastfeeding or pregnant, as well as how psychedelic compounds may affect a developing fetus or baby. Additionally, it’s also best to hold off on using psychedelics since we don’t have much research on it.

How Much Shrooms Should a Beginner Take?
Exercise caution when using higher doses of psilocybin, as the likelihood of challenging and transformative experiences increases. In his research, clinical pharmacologist Roland Griffiths, Ph.D., Found that a high dose of 30 milligrams of psilocybin per 70 kilograms and a low dose of five milligrams of psilocybin per 70 kilograms were used in the trials of psilocybin therapy at Johns Hopkins University.
Today, the guidelines for consuming and growing the commonly used psilocybin mushroom, Psilocybe cubensis, recommend using dried mushrooms. It is important to keep in mind that dried mushrooms are more potent than fresh ones. If you are consuming fresh mushrooms, it is recommended to multiply the weight of the mushrooms by 10 to determine the amount of water weight in the product. This can be a challenge when determining the dosage of dried mushrooms. Unfortunately, due to the illegal status of psilocybin mushrooms, most people do not have access to potency testing.
Microdose of Psilocybin
A microdose is typically defined as anywhere between .1 gram and .5 gram of dried psilocybin mushrooms, although some sources suggest that the upper limit can be extended to 1 gram if you do not have a tolerance to shrooms. Many individuals opt for microdosing due to its subtle benefits such as enhancing concentration and maintaining a stable mood, despite the fact that it does not typically result in a complete psychedelic experience, according to anecdotal evidence.
If you are seeking to consume a larger dose of psilocybin (i.E., Macrodose), but are worried about jumping too quickly into it, you can first acclimate yourself to the effects of psilocybin by microdosing more frequently than macrodosing. Microdosing can help you develop a strategy and check out the Fadiman protocol, which is recommended by Stamets, in order to help you with your overall psilocybin experience due to the subtlety of the effects at low doses.
Low Dose of Psilocybin
Trips that are more intense and doses that are higher will also help you develop the skills to navigate mellower psychedelic trips. However, even with lower doses, you may still have a profound psychedelic experience. Starting with a dose of two grams to .5 grams of dried psilocybin mushrooms is advisable if you are looking to trip. This will help you get a sense of the potency of your batch and get to know the effects of mushrooms, starting on the lower end of this range.
Moderate Dose of Psilocybin
It is not advisable to start with this, as the likelihood of experiencing difficulties significantly increases with higher doses. Some sources recommend that first-time trippers consume 3.5 grams of dried mushrooms. Be aware that the higher end of the range, particularly here, could result in more intense psychedelic experiences and amplified sensations. A moderate dose of dried psilocybin mushrooms is considered to be between two and 3.5 grams.
High Dose of Psilocybin
“Psychedelic experiences, commonly known as ego death, can be a challenging and profound encounter in the realm of altered consciousness. It is important to note that these experiences are not recommended for beginners, unless one is adequately prepared to confront potentially difficult material. High doses of psilocybin mushrooms, ranging from 3.5 to 5 grams of dried mushrooms, should be approached with caution and considered as a dose that is likely to produce an intense psychedelic trip. Such experiences have the potential to be spiritually and mystically transformative, impacting one’s life in significant ways.”
Terence McKenna, a late ethnobotanist, author, and advocate for psychedelics, famously advised psychonauts to embark on a deep inward journey and consume a heroic dose of five grams of psilocybin, in a quiet and dark space without any distractions, in order to fully reap the benefits and “flatten” the most resistant ego.
This trusted and vetted guide recommends these heroic-level experiences, but if you’re not prepared, they can also be potentially transformative and traumatizing. Sometimes, confronting one’s Shadow can be accompanied by the fear of going insane or dying. In Jungian psychology, the Shadow is what’s referred to as the ignored or rejected parts of oneself, and trippers are likely to confront these challenging aspects more.

Other Factors that Influence Psilocybin Potency
It is important to know that the potency of psilocybin mushrooms may vary based on how they were grown, including whether they were exposed to sunlight, the amount of time they were exposed for, and how they were stored. Additionally, the potency of mushrooms may be higher in those that are wild-harvested compared to those that are indoor-grown. It is also worth noting that the potency of psilocybin mushrooms can differ even within the same species, such as Cubensis psilocybe, from other species of psilocybin mushrooms.
It is possible that the overall effects of mushrooms, including how they affect your personality and certain physiological traits, can also be influenced by how much food you have eaten. The quality and species of the mushroom containing psilocybin are not the only factors that determine how it may affect you.
What To Expect On Shrooms
Tripping on shrooms can be a weird, wonderful, and unpredictable experience, where Dennis McKenna has said that psilocybin helps in a way that lets you pay attention to things that were previously ignored, in a relationship between the background and foreground. It’s a certain point where words fail to describe a deeply personal and mystical experience.
You may find yourself absorbed in the details that you normally take for granted, such as the gentle sway of tall grass in the breeze or the texture of tree bark. Objects in your new environment may appear strange or perhaps beautifully unfamiliar. You might notice increased sensitivity to sunlight and dilated pupils, and your body may feel light or heavy. If you have a sensitive stomach, you can try preparing lemon tek or making mushroom tea to alleviate nausea. Soon after you begin to digest and break down the fibrous mushrooms in your stomach, you may start to feel nauseous.
Other feelings and encounters that could accompany your mushroom journey consist of:
Consider the advice of Bill Richardson, the author of Sacred Knowledge, as you navigate the varied sensations of a mushroom trip. Trust, let go, and be open while intentionally considering your dose and setting.

Length of a Shroom Trip
Expect to start feeling the effects of the mushrooms within 30 to 60 minutes – it may be faster if you used the lemon tek method. The trip can last anywhere from four to six hours, and the effects can persist for up to eight hours or even longer. Although some individuals may experience the shroom trip in “waves” of varying intensity over a several-hour span, it is likely that you will reach the peak effects within one to three hours.
Difficult Mushroom Trips
You can also seek support from a hotline or a peer, or even a trip guide or sitter. If you have some experience, they may teach you something that can help with the difficult experience. To avoid slipping into a resistant state of mind, try practicing the same nonjudgmental skills of meditation that you apply here. Be patient with yourself and try to be mindful during the trip, reminding yourself that the intensity of the experience will eventually wane. Practicing coping skills and creating a supportive setting before taking a high dose of psilocybin can help you avoid challenging experiences. High doses of psilocybin may cause uncomfortable or anxious feelings, difficult thoughts or visuals, but practicing coping skills and considering a lower dose can help you avoid or manage them.
Integrating After Your First Shroom Trip
After completing significant decisions, allocate a small amount of time to reflect on your encounter. Take note of the guidance and inclinations towards personal development that you acquired from your journey, but also recollect your personal emotions and any valuable lessons or realizations that the mushrooms uncovered. It might be beneficial to document your thoughts or discuss with a trusted confidant about what aspects you wish to incorporate or “integrate” into your everyday life based on this experience. For example, the mushrooms might have provided you with insights on spending more time in nature, acquiring new skills, or pursuing a career change. Once the experience concludes, ponder upon your shroom trip.
