Hunter Biden could face trial, newly named US special counsel says

David Weiss, the Special Counsel for the U.S. President Joe Biden’s criminal trial, stated on Friday that the courtroom drama could play an important role in the 2024 presidential election, shortly after being promoted to that position. It is possible that Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden, may be headed for a trial.

A potential trial raises the possibility of an unprecedented spectacle in the U.S. History, as Donald Trump’s son, a sitting president facing criminal charges, campaigns for re-election against likely Republican rivals in his own upcoming three criminal trials.

The Republicans in the House of Representatives are also threatening an impeachment inquiry into unproven claims that President Biden benefited from business ventures of his 54-year-old son.

In June 2019, a federal judge refused to accept the plea deal proposed by Weiss, who has been investigating Hunter Biden, the alleged gun and tax criminal misdemeanor charges.

In a court filing on Friday, Weiss stated that the Government currently holds the belief that the case will not be resolved without a trial. He also mentioned that discussions between the two parties have deteriorated.

After moments came the filing of the investigation, Weiss elevated Garland Merrick to the special counsel status, giving him additional independence and authority, following the appointment of General Attorney U.S.

In the years 2017 and 2018, Hunter Biden entered a plea of innocence regarding accusations of not fulfilling tax obligations on earnings surpassing $1.5 million, despite being indebted with over $100,000. In another legal matter, he faces charges for unlawfully possessing a firearm while under the influence of illegal substances, which is classified as a serious crime, and he refrained from submitting a plea.

TRUMP APPOINTEE

Throughout the Biden presidency, Weiss was permitted to remain in his role and was initially nominated by Trump as the U.S. Attorney for Delaware.

If Garland overturns his suggested actions, he is obligated to inform Congress, but Weiss will not be subject to regular oversight from the Justice Department and has the authority to bring charges in any location within the United States as a special counsel.

Weiss declared that he might conceivably lodge substitute accusations against Hunter Biden in either Washington or California, where the alleged unlawful activities took place.

An attorney representing Hunter Biden expressed confidence that Weiss would not succumb to political influences.

Lawyer Chris Clark stated, “We expect a fair resolution that achieves what Mr. Biden needs on his behalf, without being influenced by politics, regardless of whether it is in Washington, D.C. Or Delaware.”

Garland stated that the Justice Department will release as much of it to the public as possible. Once his work is completed, Weiss will generate a report.

Garland stated during a press briefing, “The selection of Mr. Weiss strengthens the department’s dedication to both autonomy and responsibility in particularly delicate issues, which resonates with the American public.”

During the fall season, Kevin McCarthy, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, stated that the chamber could initiate an impeachment inquiry. Despite not presenting any proof of misconduct, Republicans have alleged that the older Biden has made financial gains from his son’s business endeavors in Ukraine and China.

The White House declined to comment. Republican officials previously dismissed the conspiracy theories as “insane allegations” against Biden. It has been stated that Biden did not participate in his son’s business affairs.

Hunter Biden has stated that he has struggled with the use of cocaine, crack, and alcoholism. Additionally, he has worked as an investment banker, consultant, lawyer, and lobbyist.

McCarthy stated that Republicans did not have the necessary credibility to carry on with the Weiss investigation. “Considering he is a Special Counsel, we can rely on his trustworthiness. How can he be the one to negotiate a deal that is biased and cannot be approved?” McCarthy questioned.

Weiss is the third special counsel designated by Garland to probe politically delicate issues.

Robert Hur, the Vice President’s office left after mishandling classified documents, is being investigated to determine if Biden is involved. In separate cases, criminal charges have been filed against Jack Smith, another one of those who filed charges against Trump.

During past administrations, independent counsels have examined the disclosure of a CIA operative and Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Hunter Biden has been a focal point of various Republican congressional committees.

According to Devon Archer, the witness, the discussions did not entail business transactions while his father served as vice president. As per a former associate who testified before the House Oversight Committee, while conducting business in Ukraine almost ten years ago, Hunter conveyed an impression of highlighting his familial connections. Hunter claimed that although he spoke with his father on a daily basis, their conversations did not revolve around business matters.

Stephen Cheung, his spokesperson, stated that Biden’s younger son has frequently mentioned the possibility of a rematch in the 2024 presidential election, as both father and son gear up to tar Trump in an attempt to “conclude quickly” and face the required consequences.

According to a June poll conducted by Ipsos/Reuters, half of Americans, including 33% of Democrats and 75% of Republicans, believed that younger voters received preferential treatment from Weiss, which would not affect their vote next year.
