The president, along with his family, has not ceased his efforts to combat corruption, despite the recent allegations made by Republicans in Congress. However, this ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, took an unexpected turn this week with the announcement of a plea deal, which aims to prevent him from going to prison. This five-year probe conducted by the Department of Justice has now reached a critical juncture.
Complained together in April, GOP lawmakers released transcripts on Thursday from two IRS whistleblowers who accused the U.S. Attorney appointed by Trump of making statements that sabotaged investigators’ efforts to level harsher penalties against the younger Biden in the accusation of an odds at case made by the Department of Justice.
The recent allegations made by a whistleblower have prompted investigative efforts by Rep. James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, and the GOP-led House Oversight Committee. However, so far, these efforts have not produced many significant findings.
The allegations made by the IRS informants were disregarded by the Justice Department on Thursday. Furthermore, the White House has consistently downplayed the Republican allegations, referring to them as baseless insinuations designed to undermine President Biden’s political reputation.
The agreement reached by his lawyers with federal prosecutors this week seems to have only intensified lawmakers’ efforts to target the Biden family, rather than alleviating Republicans’ long-standing focus on Hunter Biden. Republican leaders referred to the deal as a “favorable” agreement that would undermine trust in the criminal justice system, which still needs to be approved by a federal judge.
These are some of the latest claims put forth by the Republican party, along with the current knowledge about them and the aspects that are still uncertain.
‘Sitting here with my father’
Republicans in Congress have claimed that senior officials in the Justice Department thwarted the rollout of allegations against Hunter Biden by invoking his father’s political connections and a purported message from a Chinese business associate, which was seized on WhatsApp in July 2017.
Hunter Biden purportedly penned, “Inform the director that I prefer to address this issue promptly, before it escalates, and promptly denotes this evening.” “I am currently present with my father, and we seek clarity on the reasons behind the unfulfilled commitment.”
“I will make certain that sitting next to the man between you and me, every person knows my ability to hold a grudge forever, and he knows that you will not regret following my direction,” the chairman, or Zhang, continued the message. “If I get a text or call from anyone else involved in this, Z, I will get in touch with my father and wait here.”
The president was not involved in any business dealings with his son. Ian Sams, a spokesperson from the White House, restated on Friday that this undermines President Biden’s assertion that he never talked about international business ventures with his son. However, Republicans argue that ABC News was unable to promptly confirm the WhatsApp message.
In July 2017, Joe Biden’s term as vice president had already ended, despite some incorrect suggestions by Republicans on Thursday that Hunter Biden was in the throes of addiction and had admitted it himself.
On a Friday afternoon, Chris Clark, the primary lawyer representing Hunter Biden, criticized the “prejudiced and politically-driven disclosures” by the GOP and aimed to separate Hunter Biden’s supposed statements from those of President Biden.
“According to Clark, there is no connection between his family and anyone, and his addiction is solely his own. Any actions or words from my client in the midst of this horrible addiction can be verified.”
Yesterday, a very biased individual publicly released a document that raises serious questions about the authenticity of the “message” and also casts doubt on Clark’s claims.
If Joe Biden’s uncles, Frank and James, had invoked their family name to secure business deals, it would definitely raise ethical and political questions for the White House. This circumstance could have been a case where it wasn’t necessarily a crime, but it is important to acknowledge that if Joe Biden wasn’t in office at the time, the evidence may not have amounted to anything. The fact remains that this situation would certainly face scrutiny and raise concerns about the integrity and values of the Biden family.
President Biden actively engaged in Hunter Biden’s business ventures, contradicting their broader assertion, as indicated by other records made public by the committee on Thursday.
During the interview with the committee, Rob Walker, one of Hunter Biden’s business associates, shared an anecdote in which he mentioned, “I definitely never thought that the Vice President was involved in any of our activities,” as he recounted an interview he had with one of the IRS informants.
The unproven Biden bribery claim
After months of hearings in the Senate and House, Republicans recently turned their focus more on an “alleged criminal scheme” involving then Vice President Biden and a national foreign policy decision related to the exchange of money for policy decisions, as framed by Sen. Chuck Grassley from Iowa’s press release on May 3.
The legislators stated that, throughout the time that ex-President Donald Trump held office, the FBI was provided with the tip in June 2020. As per Republicans who examined the FBI record being referred to as an FD-1023, a foreign individual who facilitated the supposed $10 million bribe had recorded 17 audio conversations between him and the Bidens.
After weeks of heated discussions that reached a point where the committee threatened to hold FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress on Tuesday, Comer was finally granted permission to access the redacted FD-1023. Comer expressed his frustration with the process, stating that it was a complete waste of his time, considering that over fifty percent of the document had been redacted, according to his comments to reporters afterwards.
Comer informed journalists, speaking about the Ukrainian oil company where Hunter Biden previously held a position on the board, ‘The only information I have is that it made reference to Hunter Biden, Burisma, and there was an inquiry related to fraudulent activities occurring.’ ‘However, there were numerous sections that were censored, making it difficult to discern any details.’
The elder Biden informed reporters that the White House has since confirmed the statement, stating, “As a presidential candidate in September 2019, I have never had any conversations with my son regarding his business activities abroad.”
Concluding the evaluation, Barr and his selected U.S. Attorney approved it in August 2020, as stated by Raskin, who mentioned that the Justice Department during the Trump era examined the allegations. Raskin accused Comer of “rehashing outdated and discredited Burisma conspiracy theories” and also had a chance to examine the FD-1023 earlier this month, Rep. Jamie Raskin, the leading Democrat on the Oversight panel.
The White House spokesperson, Sams, called the Republicans’ claims of bribery yet another fact-free stunt staged by Chairman Comer to try to spread thin innuendo and politically damage President Biden, but not to overlook the legitimate conduct.
Investigating the investigators
To avoid prosecution for a felony gun charge and plead guilty to a pair of tax-related misdemeanors, Hunter Biden will adhere to the terms of the pretrial diversion program, under which a federal judge’s approval is still required for the plea agreement. Several high-ranking Republicans became publicly angry when details of Hunter Biden’s plea deal, brokered by attorney David Weiss, who was appointed by Trump, emerged this week.
Several Republicans claim that Democrats support a criminal justice system that showed a dual-level system. Former President Trump described it as a “minor traffic offense,” whereas House Speaker Kevin McCarthy called it a “favorable agreement.”
Weiss is set to give testimony before Congress, expressing their interest in Congressman Jordan, the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee and the response to the plea deal made by Comer, a Republican from Ohio.
Weiss stated that in order to safeguard sensitive law enforcement data from being exposed, he “regrettably cannot comply with the Committee’s inquiry for records and details.” He explained in a letter to Jordan on June 7 that his ongoing investigation was the reason behind this decision. Weiss had previously rejected Republicans’ attempts to gain further insight into his inquiry.
He expressed in the letter, Weiss also, that he had been given complete control over this issue, which included the duty of determining the appropriate time, place, and necessity of pressing charges.
The ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden, which seems to contradict the statement from Hunter Biden’s attorney, has been resolved into its fifth year of understanding. Republicans have seized on Weiss’ statement, made in his plea deal announcement.
Comer informed Axios that he will request clarity from Weiss regarding what he means when he says “investigation ongoing,” as efforts by lawmakers to learn more about the underpinnings of the investigative probe could complicate matters.
Mr. Merrick Garland, the General Attorney, informed ABC News on Friday that he would support testifying or explaining matters when he deems it appropriate.
Garland expressed, “Nothing could be further from the truth. It is essential to the safety of the American people and essential to American democracy that an attack on this institution constitutes.” He added, “I certainly understand that some have chosen to attack the integrity of the Department of Justice, its employees, and its components, claiming that we do not treat alike cases.”
