  • Hurricane Restoration FAQs

Q Is the bridge open to the public?

The City of Sanibel asks non-residents to understand and respect the fact that Sanibel is still actively working to recover from Hurricane Ian, as supported by the consensus decision of the City Council, which passed the reentry requirement on January 2, 2023.

Q Are the causeway islands open for beach access?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) will be actively initiating construction over the next few years for a more lasting solution to the bridges. As for now, the bridge has only been repaired as a temporary measure. Presently, the causeway is still undergoing maintenance, prohibiting any form of stopping or visitation to the spoil islands.

Q Are the shared-use paths (bike paths) open?

There might be nails on the bike path that can potentially result in punctured tires. The city’s shared-use path (bike path) still has numerous places with accumulated debris, awaiting pickup.

    Q Are the beaches open?

As we proceed with the recovery process and more beaches open, individuals using our Wander Map application can monitor the latest updates regarding beach access availability.

Q Are there any businesses open?

On this page, you can find the reversed version of the paragraph you provided: Click Here———————————–. On this page, you will find the list of businesses that are currently open, and we do have an up-to-date list available. Limited activities have resulted in limited access to beach parks and beach parking, although some restrictions may apply. Restaurants and retail businesses are gradually reopening on a weekly basis, while the availability of lodging is still limited as recovery efforts move forward.

Q What time frame will it take before the islands are acceptable for visitation?

Due to the high demand for building supplies, it has become difficult to find a solid place for rehabilitation on frame time. Although there are only a few businesses that have reopened, there are some that continue to reopen.

Q Where can I volunteer to help clean the beach or in any other capacity that may be needed on the islands?

Q Are the streets cleared and safe for travel?

Debris collection from individual properties and the City’s public areas is currently in progress. Occasionally, the presence of debris collection trucks may disrupt the flow of traffic and lead to travel delays.

Q Are the fishing pier or boat ramp open?

The fishing dock is shut but the boat launch is accessible.

Q Is there still a curfew in the place?

The curfew has been lifted and is no longer in operation.
