I Love You Virus | First computer virus created by Onel de Guzmán

Many users consider the extension .Vbs to be a normal text file, which makes this virus catch the attention of many users. When the user opens the attachment, the Visual Basic script is activated and it corrupts the local machine, overwriting all files such as addresses in the Windows address book, as well as audio and images.

Outlook, a Microsoft email service, can transmit virus payloads that have the capability to send emails, download malware or other files, modify files, and overwrite data. This worm, Virus You Love I, was written in the Microsoft Visual Basic Scripting (VBS) language and took advantage of the fact that the system scripting was enabled by default in Windows 2000 to spread through email attachments.

Onel de Guzmán, a college student from the Philippines, is the mastermind behind the ILOVEYOU Virus. Onel, a 24-year-old student pursuing his undergraduate degree, developed the virus as part of his thesis at AMA Computer College. Surprisingly, Onel was completely unaware that the virus he designed would eventually propagate globally, as revealed by the investigation conducted by Philippine authorities.
