One day in Riverton, Ohio, John wishes to join the full support of the Riverton Police Department. In reality, John works as a security guard at the laboratory in Riverton. When John wakes up, he is greeted by Penny, his niece’s dog, licking his face. The entire situation turns out to be a reality as John tells him that he is a hero and congratulates him. Brenda, a witness named Auberjonois, tells John that he is a scientist who runs the robotics laboratory. John works as a security guard at the laboratory, giving it back and grabbing it in time to save it from danger. However, the dog is still in danger, so John saves the day by stopping the bus, pulling the kids away, and throwing the dog back on the street. Then, he notices kids walking a dog while inside the bus, and screams for help from scared people with no brakes. At that moment, John realizes that he is working as a police officer named Brown “John” Jonathan in Riverton, Ohio.
Brenda and Artemus decide to turn John into a completely cybernetic man using a computer chip that harnesses his built-in powers. They take great care in rushing the intensive process, as John screams in pain when the blue bowling ball dynamite stick thrown by Sanford blows him up, severely wounding both of them. However, Sanford, in his pursuit of John, steals his foot, which is part of his plan to eventually conquer the world and create an army of machines using replicated technology. Rupert (Scolex Sanford’s tycoon) attacks and kills Everett in the lab, but Program Gadget, the prototype for Brenda’s plan, can be controlled. They decide to create a life-like robotic foot for John with Artemus’ help.
In the scrapyard, Gadget is discarded after Claw and his henchmen Kramer and Sykes capture him, extract and crush his computer chip, and deactivate him (and seemingly kill him). Claw successfully creates an evil duplicate of Gadget named RoboGadget after infiltrating Brenda’s systems and stealing her research, while Gadget covertly infiltrates Claw’s headquarters and discovers that Dr. Claw is responsible for Artemus’ murder with the assistance of Penny and the Gadgetmobile. Inspector Gadget decides to take on the Bradford case in secrecy, dissatisfied with his mediocre performance. He recruits Brenda to join his enterprise, with the intention of utilizing her technology to construct his first mechanical army. After his henchmen attempt to assign him various names, Sanford changes his moniker to Dr. Claw after receiving a prosthetic claw. Meanwhile, Gadget is compelled to undertake community service assignments when he desires to investigate the Bradford case, and he is accompanied by his conversing, intelligent vehicle, the Gadgetmobile. This aggravates Chief Quimby. John, now assuming the identity of Inspector Gadget, joins the police force.
In the future, Brenda and Gadget will meet again. They will become a couple, but Dr. Claw, the robotic Chief, will apprehend them when Penny, who now has robotic hands and a robotic foot, appears with the reformed Sykes. He is promptly arrested by the police. Gadget and Brenda are able to safely descend to the ground using a parachute and an umbrella, while Claw attempts to escape using his helicopter and takes Brenda captive. Soon after, Claw tries to make his escape in his helicopter, but Gadget throws the robot’s head into the nearby river, apparently drowning and killing him. Ignoring Claw’s reply that he should have quit while he was ahead, Gadget tries to convince RoboGadget to join forces and rule the world together. As they fight across a bridge, Gadget pulls on a cord on his counterpart’s neck, causing his head to fall off. Gadget manages to revive Brenda by kissing her, while the group rushes to Riverton to stop RoboGadget. Meanwhile, RoboGadget goes on a rampage across the city. Gadget, Inspector Gadgetmobile, Brain, Penny, and Brenda confront RoboGadget in the junkyard.
During the closing credits, RoboBrenda can be observed instructing “robo-aerobics,” while the body of RoboGadget is observed sprinting through the streets and eventually colliding with the camera. Sikes has now joined a support-recovery group, and Penny is now outfitted with a wrist-monitor as she attempts to establish communication with Brain (voiced by Don Adams). The Gadgetmobile proceeds to inform the audience about its experiences following the conclusion of the film (while also asserting that it was the protagonist despite the title being Inspector Gadget).

The Gadgetmobile, also known as the Gadgetmobile, is a particular fan favorite among cars. He constantly breaks the law openly, as he says, “Speed limits are okay: it turns.” The Gadgetmobile has a laid-back personality and possesses artificial intelligence. He keeps a powerful engine in his trunk and has retractable jail bars in the back seat for transporting criminals. His tires can extend well, and he has a radar tracking system to locate other people. He can also camouflage himself and has other gadgets. Among his persona, he is a male with artificial intelligence. Unlike the cartoon car from the police, he does not transform into a maurena matra. Instead, he is based on a 1964 Lincoln Continental convertible designed by Bradford, Brenda, called the Gadgetmobile.
D. L. Hughley provides the voice for the Gadgetmobile.
The film’s soundtrack includes the song “I’ll Be Your Everything” by the young male group Youngstown.
On March 11, 2003, a straight-to-DVD sequel named Inspector Gadget 2 was launched.
