Ja Morant threatened mall security director 4 days before teen-punch accusation, records show

In July of last year, a report detailing an incident was submitted, indicating that the director of security at the Wolfchase Galleria felt endangered by Ja Morant, a prominent player of the Memphis Grizzlies, and his “acquaintances.”

Morant’s mother was engaged in the initial altercation, however, The Washington Post stated on Wednesday that it was indeed Morant’s mother. The incident report does not clarify whose mother participated in the initial dispute, but rather The Finish Line shoe store. She was requested to depart the store and contacted her son, which was the moment Ja Morant and the group appeared at the mall. As stated in the report, an individual’s mother was engaged in a disagreement with a staff member within The Finish Line shoe store.

The director of mall security reported that a group of approximately nine to 10 individuals, who requested the incident report to be filed, were unwilling to vacate the parking lot.

The director of security was informed to leave the group and walked across the sidewalk when the officers from the Memphis Police Department arrived.

In the report, it was mentioned that a verbal confrontation started between them and suspect #1, which made the security director angry. The report did not mention Ja Morant by name, even though he was involved in the incident.

To avert a physical confrontation, Officer Edwards strategically positioned himself between the two individuals. The aggressive fighting stance assumed by both individuals was a direct consequence of an undisclosed action executed by suspect #1 over Officer Edwards’ shoulder.

The security director at the forefront of the incident stated that the individual who was pushed did not witness what had happened since he returned to his position, but the officer never mentioned the name of the “suspect #1.”

According to the report, Morant and the rest of the group successfully persuaded the suspect to vacate the parking lot. No injuries occurred throughout the incident.

However, the report alleges that Morant said, “Let me find out what time he gets off and get him out of here,” citing the director of security as the cause of the feeling of being threatened.

The Memphis Grizzlies failed to reply to a request for comment.

Mall incident happened before Ja Morant punched teen

The residence of Morant, whose identity was withheld, was verified by both the Grizzlies player and the adolescent. The occurrence, which transpired on June 26, 2022, unfolded approximately four days prior to Morant being alleged of striking a teenager during a basketball match at the shopping center.

When they were on the ground, Morant persistently hit him, resulting in the teenager being knocked down by a closed fist. The teenager informed the police about the incident.

As per the report, the adolescent had hurled a basketball towards Morant, striking him on the face.

Morant’s statement to law enforcement indicated that the adolescent hurled the ball at him, purposely making contact with his face, and proceeded towards Morant in a manner suggesting a desire to engage in combat. Morant explained that he resorted to striking the teenager as a means to protect himself… Morant further stated that the occurrence was promptly halted by onlookers present at the scene.

Morant informed the authorities that the teenager, while being escorted away, made a threat to “set his house on fire.”

The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office said it declined to press charges in the incident, citing a lack of evidence to prosecute.

In a written declaration, Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy stated, ‘We are unable to provide any remarks on an ongoing legal action.’ The office of the District Attorney is knowledgeable about the occurrence, and following a thorough examination of the details, concluded that there was insufficient proof to pursue a legal matter.

There are currently no publicly available records in the court circuit regarding the case, and criminal charges do not appear in the court’s records relating to the criminal case.

The law enforcement fully investigated the incident that occurred on July 26th, as confirmed by dozens of witnesses. After careful consideration, they concluded that there was no charge of any crime against Ja. Agent Jim Tanner stated that the incident was purely an act of self-defense.
