She is captured by the Capitol, and Johanna joins the cause of the Second Rebellion during the Third Quarter Quell. Johanna is a hardcore rebel against the Capitol, having developed a crippling fear of water and a reliance on morphling as a result of being heavily tortured.
Personality: Brutish, Angry Fighter, Deceptively Intelligent
Mason Johanna is both cunning and clever, standing out among the tributes with her exceptional survival instincts. She utilizes her cognitive abilities to devise intelligent strategies and possesses quick feet. During the Hunger Games, these two qualities, being deceptive and manipulative, also aided her in staying alive as a contestant.
Johanna seems to have her own set of moral rules and does not abide by anyone else’s rules. If she decides to sell her body to the citizens of Capitol, even if it comes at the cost of the lives of her family and friends, she refuses to kill the tributes “viciously” in the arena. However, Johanna is paradoxical in nature as she does not have any moral pangs about this decision.
Johanna admits that she has no love for the remaining ones, as she is the ferocious female victor of the Games. Katniss is amazed by the fact that Johanna remains unaffected by Prim’s cries, tortured by her friend Gale and beloved sister, while they are in the arena. An incident worth noting is when Johanna and Katniss encounter jabberjays, where Katniss realizes that Johanna is amazed by the fact that she is unaffected. After the deaths of her loved ones, Johanna becomes extremely cynical and often makes snarky comments about the Capitol, from the plain view of the whole country. She openly expresses her discontent with the Capitol, even without fearing any retaliation. Johanna is bold, unafraid, and courageous, not afraid to speak her mind.
Johanna, who often shocks Katniss with her crude and highly abrasive actions and words, is a brave woman who ends up breaking the continuous torture of the Capitol by leaving her crippling fear of water and dependence on Morphling.
Physical Description
Johanna, as described by Suzanne Collins, has brown spiky hair and wide brown-set eyes. She is slightly built and has an average height that is stronger and healthier than tributes from other districts.
As Johanna undergoes a gradual process of rehabilitation, she initiates the recovery of her vitality, while patches of hair begin to sprout from her scalp. Johanna’s head was forcibly shaved during her torment by the Capitol, and she returns to District 13 with a frail, gaunt physique and various injuries scattered across her body.
Family and Background
Johanna Mason, who comes from District 7, grew up performing physically demanding labor, often with axes, which made her much stronger and leaner than children from other districts. This gave her an advantage in the 71st Hunger Games.
Using her distinctive weapon, the hurling axe, Johanna ultimately secured the top spot by ruthlessly eliminating the remaining competitors. Once a sufficient number of tributes had been vanquished, she abandoned her feigned helplessness and displayed her true nature. The training score she was awarded also misled her fellow tributes into perceiving her as hardly a menace after being chosen for her initial Games. Johanna formulated a tactic to appear feeble and defenseless in the presence of the other competitors.
When Johanna refused to comply with this plan, she grew into such a highly cynical and sarcastic person. However, President Snow wished to sell her body to the citizens of the Capitol, as Johanna was one of the most desirable and highly regarded Victors. Everyone loved Johanna, but Snow had her murdered when she refused to comply with this plan.
Relationship with Finnick
In the books, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that Johanna Mason and Finnick Odair were romantically involved at any given time. Instead, Johanna and Finnick maintain a strong bond of friendship, which is believed to have developed when they served as mentors for their respective district tributes during previous Hunger Games. This assumption is made.
Relationship with Katniss and Peeta
Johanna, who also disliked the “tacky” romantic drama between Peeta and Katniss, brings Wiress and Beetee to Haymitch’s suggestion to join Katniss in the alliance. However, Johanna deemed Katniss to be too “pure” and crude, while Katniss found Johanna to be extremely crude. Everdeen and Johanna did not get off to a great start, but they both wanted to lead the rebellion.
Johanna jumps in to rescue Katniss when she fails to expose Attacks, Brutus, and Enobaria’s plan. However, she removes the tracking device from her hand and knocks her out. Unfortunately, Johanna herself is captured and tortured by the Capitol while Katniss is captured and transported safely to District 13, due to the lack of a tracker.
During the rebellion, she refrains from actively participating. As a result, Johanna becomes paralyzed with fear when confronted with floods and is considered unsuitable for training, whereas Katniss successfully completes the training. In order to overthrow the Capitol, the two of them come to the decision of training together. Throughout her life, she has endured heart-wrenching loss and suffering and openly shares her experiences from childhood, while Johanna allows Katniss to take her morphling. In the hospital, Katniss and Johanna develop a strong bond with each other following the rescue mission that brought Johanna back from the Capitol.
During the tumultuous time of the Rebellion, Johanna finds solace and peace, as the pine cones serve as a nostalgic reminder of her home district. She presents her with some fragrant pine cones, and Katniss assures Johanna that she will eliminate President Snow (a commitment that, regrettably, she is unable to uphold).
