Last year, during the 4th of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, a tragic incident occurred where seven people were shot and killed, including a toddler. The victims of this incident were two parents who were enjoying a fun outing with their beloved toddler. The grandparents of the toddler, who immigrated from Mexico, were devastated by this heartbreaking event and strive to create a better life for their family.
According to FBI statistics, it had been over two decades since a homicide occurred in that peaceful suburban town of Chicago. The mass shooting was reportedly executed by a 21-year-old assailant.
Officials reported that a seventh individual tragically passed away from their injuries at Evanston Hospital, just one day following the massacre. As stated by officials, one individual lost their life at a medical facility, whereas five of the victims who were shot indiscriminately died at the location of the incident.
More than 30 people were injured as bullets from the barrage silenced and wounded paradegoers and marching bands, prompting a scramble to provide cover.

Katherine Goldstein (middle) is shown in this photo. Goldstein is one of the victims of the Highland Park shooting.
Katherine Goldstein was an avid bird watcher and the mother of two adult daughters, who loved to travel and told her friend about it, according to ABC News.
Betsy Backes said that she first met Goldstein when they both were pregnant with their second children and invited her to her home in Chicago’s north center community, where their close friendship began. The friendship abruptly ended 20 years later when Goldstein was gunned down at the parade.
Backes spoke fondly of Katie G., Describing her as an extraordinary person who was always there for her kids and was everyone’s best friend.
She stated that their daughters matured together, and the families would set off on thrilling adventures — all of which were coordinated by Goldstein.
“No one could organize an expedition like she did,” she mentioned.
On Halloween nights, she mentioned that the mothers would distribute candy at the Goldsteins’ entrance while the fathers accompanied the daughters for trick-or-treating. Subsequently, they would arrange for Thai cuisine and collectively gather to dine.
Backes expressed, “This is a delightful recollection.” Being accompanied by their fathers, the young girls were extremely joyful, and being in the company of my acquaintance, Katie, and distributing sweets to the local children, I was overjoyed.
Backes mentioned that Goldstein was a passionate bird observer and thoroughly enjoyed going to the Chicago Botanic Garden. Goldstein’s friend also mentioned that she was always fond of trying out new recipes and preparing delicious salmon for lunch.
When Goldstein visited her home on Tuesday, she spotted a recipe notebook on the kitchen counter. Backes, who saw it, said that the list of new recipes was a fun and adventurous way for Goldstein to cook meals, including a dish from the Middle Eastern region with the spice za’atar.
“I looked down and I smiled because I thought, ‘Of course you’re doing that, Katie. Of course you’re doing that,'” Backes said.
