Keesler Air Force Base Mississippi, situated in Harrison County, is one of the few Air Force bases in the state and was established in memory of Samuel Reeves Keesler Jr., A local resident who lost his life during World War I.
History
The Radar School decided to relocate to Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi in 1947, maintaining the two most important technical schools in the military field. By the summer of 1946, the basic training sessions had been shut down. Despite the intense activity for the returning troops, the number of recruits decreased as World War II was coming to an end. By 1943, there were over 7000 troops stationed at the base, eagerly preparing for war. The schools provided training in various fields such as mechanics, gunnery specialists, aerial cadets, radio operators, and bombardiers. Equipped with the latest and most expensive equipment, the base was ready to conduct training sessions. The first recruits arrived in August of the same year. This project was the most expensive endeavor ever undertaken in Mississippi at that time. In June of the same year, after spending approximately $10M, the authorities officially opened the base. It took only a few months for the base to be fully operational. With World War II on the horizon, the government swiftly established multiple bases throughout the entire US territory. In early 1941, as the war loomed, the Biloxi authorities extended an official invitation to the US Army to build a solid base in the area.
During a temporary closure of the base, a significant transformation occurred in 1993. The identity of the most crucial units and the designated base for their operations remained uncertain. While certain individuals were departing, others were arriving. The hosting units underwent extensive modernization as part of the complete restructuring of the Air Force in the 1990s. Ultimately, the activity gradually diminished and ultimately ceased following the conclusion of the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War, which marked three additional milestones in the base’s history.
Two of the most significant occurrences in the base’s history are the powerful hurricanes Camille and Katrina, with Camille flooding the entire base in 1969 and Katrina flooding half the base and resulting in extensive damages in 2005.
