Libraries Respond: Drag Queen Story Hour

The commitment of ALA includes combating underrepresentation and marginalization within communities served by libraries, with the increased understanding of the historical effects of exclusion. It is instrumental in creating a more diverse and equitable society, through the actions of its members and organization. We welcome your contributions and will continue to add to this collection of resources. A few libraries have experienced pushback from some members of their community, who have participated or hosted Drag Queen Story Hours across the country.

Note: Programming decisions are determined at the local level and are influenced by each library’s specific policies.

The official website for Drag Queen Story Hour is www.Dragqueenstoryhour.Org. It was established by Michelle Tea and RADAR Productions in San Francisco, California. Drag Queen Story Hour is a program or event where drag queens read stories to children in libraries, schools, or bookstores.
