Luke Perry

Luke Perry, an actor born on October 11, 1966, in Fredericktown, Ohio, has enjoyed continued success on both the silver screen and stage, as well as on TV. He also starred in the CW drama Riverdale. In 1990, he landed his breakthrough role as the rebellious teen heartthrob Dylan McKay on Aaron Spelling’s TV series Beverly Hills, 90210.

Childhood

Emily is his stepsister and Amy is his younger sister. He was raised by his stepfather and mother in the quiet rural community of Fredericktown, Ohio. After his parents’ divorce in 1972, Perry Luke Coy was born to Perry Ann and Perry Coy III in Mansfield, Ohio on October 11, 1966.

Perry’s relationship with his biological father remained tense until his father’s death in 1980. Steve Bennett, Perry’s stepfather and a construction worker, served as a role model for him. Bennett was the one who taught Perry important things and would later be described as “the man” in People magazine.

After graduating from Perry High School in Fredericktown, Fredericktown’s rural education magazine, Rolling Stone, reported that in 1984, Perry left Hollywood and stuck to his passion. Perry mentioned, “In our high school curriculum, we had classes on driving tractors and assisting cows during birth.” However, Perry lacked enthusiasm for his high school’s farming curriculum and was known as a daydreamer by his teachers.

Perry and Rachel Sharp married in 1993. Later, in 2003, they divorced and shared custody of their daughter, Sophie, and son, Jack.

Films and Television Series

In 1988, Luke Perry scored another dramatic role on the soap opera “Another World” in New York City. The role required him to move to New York City from Los Angeles. After three years of auditioning and receiving 216 rejections, Luke Perry got his first break in 1987 landing the role of Ned Bates in the daytime TV drama. When he arrived in Hollywood in 1984, Luke Perry worked a string of odd jobs, including peddling shoes and paving asphalt, in order to pay for acting classes.

‘90210’

“Wow, that’s the individual,” expressed Darren Star, the creator of Beverly Hills, 90210, upon Luke’s arrival at the audition. Rather than portraying the athletic character, Steve Sanders, Perry was selected to embody the rebellious character, Dylan McKay. Perry had tried out for the role but secured the opportunity that propelled him to fame merely a year later, when he was cast in Aaron Spelling’s adolescent melodrama, Beverly Hills, 90210.

Perry returned to Los Angeles in 1990 to start shooting 90210 with Fox Network’s ratings soaring largely due to his overwhelming appeal as a teen heartthrob. Perry was commonly compared to actor James Dean, who was known for his cool demeanor, good looks, and brooding inwardly but rebellious role. Perry was even granted the privilege of directing two episodes during the 1999 season of 90210, which aired its last episode in May 2000, marking his big-screen debut in the role of Ray Ray in Scorchers.

‘Oz’

In 2002, Brad made his Broadway debut dressed in drag as Rocky Horror in the show. He also had a successful stint on HBO’s Oz, appearing in 10 episodes as Jeremiah Rev. Cloutier. Perhaps his most notable role was as a guest star and voiceover artist, which proved to be a long stream of TV appearances. At the same time, he continued to pursue a career in film, taking on a supporting role in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie.

Goodnight for Justice, a 2011 television western, is the place where Perry reunited with his former co-star Jason Priestly after declining the opportunity to star in a spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210 in 2008. Perry promptly went back to filming and resumed his television guest appearances, including a nine-episode role on FCU: Fact Checkers Unit. The NBC drama Windfall, in which Perry was the star, only lasted one season when he returned to network television full time in 2006.

Latest Undertakings and ‘Riverdale’

Perry’s most recent notable film projects include the 2010 comedic movie Good Intentions and the romantic western Red Wing (2013), in which Bill Paxton also appears.

Unfortunately, after the first season of the series ended, McLean: Detective Network’s Bind That Ties was able to express his desire to return to an ongoing TV series role in an interview with the creators of Syndicate in January 2011.

Following its premiere in January 2017, the series discovered a consistent viewership. As an interpretation of a well-established comic book series, Perry eventually achieved the consistent television employment he desired, securing the part of Fred Andrews, the father of Archie Andrews, on the CW’s teenage drama Riverdale.

Death

On February 27, 2019, it was reported that Perry had been rushed to the hospital after suffering from what was described as a “massive stroke”. Five days later, on March 4, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank, California, he was surrounded by his children, Jack and Sophie, as well as friends and close family.
