The American Muckrakers PAC shared a sexually explicit video featuring a naked Cawthorn in bed with another man, with the intention of undermining Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn in a private setting.
“But it was evident that no one was going to,” Wheeler stated. An insider informed David Wheeler, a Democratic party member and co-founder of the political action committee, that the video had been offered to various media outlets. Wheeler expressed his desire for someone else to have shared it.
“He stated,” we simply couldn’t ignore it, “in the best interest of the public.” “We simply believed that this video and his contradicting behavior needed to be highlighted.”
The group known as FireMadison.Com also played a key role in exposing damaging information about Chuck Edwards, the North Carolina State Senator who lost in the primary on Tuesday.
In the previous year, the organization exposed Cawthorn’s endeavor to transport a firearm through the Asheville Regional Airport, spearheaded by Wheeler and co-founder, retired Air Force Colonel Moe Davis, who contested against Cawthorn in the year 2020. Additionally, they lodged a grievance alleging that Cawthorn breached US House ethical guidelines by purportedly offering complimentary accommodations and presents to a staff associate.
Went too far, the video exposing thought some showed a naked Cawthorn in bed thrusting his pelvis at the other man’s head.
Clay Aiken, the ex-American Idol celebrity and Democratic representative from North Carolina, expressed to BuzzFeed News that he was “angry.”
On Tuesday, Aiken, whose attempt to become the inaugural openly-LGBTQ representative from the South concluded with his defeat in the primary, expressed his disbelief, stating “I find it absurd” that a fellow Democrat would reach out and humiliate him in that constituency to attempt to shame someone based on their sexual orientation, the concept that anyone would do so.
“Definitely, the accusation was for individuals to determine whether they should believe it or not. According to Christopher Cooper, a professor of political science at Western Carolina University, the accusation played on homophobic stereotypes and engaged in gay-baiting tactics, causing many people to think that ‘Madison Fire,’ a released statement, contained such elements.”
Wheeler stated that their choice to release the video “was unrelated” to Cawthorn’s sexual orientation.
Wheeler stated, “There was this absolute hypocrisy about someone in a hotel room filming and everyone pretending to be above it.” Wheeler added, “We couldn’t care less about his sexuality.”
A representative from Cawthorn did not reply to a request for a statement.
Cawthorn came under fire for his hypocritical actions when published photos of him wearing women’s lingerie surfaced on POLITICO. He was criticized for attacking “radical expressions” of gender and sexuality during a speech on the House floor, while also being accused of attending orgies in Washington.
“He looks down on gay and lesbian folks and criticizes their lifestyle, criticizes who they are, criticize who they love,” Wheeler said.
“That’s all there is to it.” We were joking and acting foolishly. I was trying to be funny, being crass with a friend. He responded to the release of the nude video by saying PAC. Cawthorn called the lingerie photos from a cruise game “goofy vacation photos.”
“That put us on the map”
Wheeler stated that the group includes a number of Republicans among its advisors. Davis has since altered his registration to “unaffiliated,” and Cawthorn triumphed over Davis in the general election by a margin of 12 percentage points. Both Wheeler, a previous candidate for state Senate, and Davis ran for office as Democrats but were unsuccessful in 2020.
Wheeler said he received the nude video from an anonymous source who claimed to be a former donor and supporter of Cawthorn, but the person’s name would never be revealed.
The PAC sat on the recording for a better part of the week, considering whether they were being duped, whether any minors were in the video, and whether they would break any laws by posting it in North Carolina.
Wheeler believes that the PAC might initiate legal action. The ActBlue fundraising platform removed the organization from its website, and the PAC’s email service provider ultimately requested them to remove it, as stated by Wheeler.
Wheeler said that they have heard some criticism about the decisions they make and they are feeling a bit defensive about it. The oldest LGBTQ rights organization in the state of North Carolina, Equality, has endorsed both of them, and they claim to have no history of homophobia.
He stated, “It’s the opposite of what we were attempting to accomplish.,” “I’m unsure as to why individuals would perceive that as opposed to the insincerity.”
On April 27th, an ethics complaint was brought to light, highlighting a video of a staffer from Cawthorn’s office reaching for Cawthorn’s crotch from the backseat of a car. The video also includes suggestive messages exchanged between two men, hinting at a historical connection on Venmo.
Wheeler stated, “That’s everything we were indicating.” “Engaging in a romantic connection with a staff member of the US House, that violates the rules of the House,”.
Equality North Carolina chose not to provide a comment when Insider contacted them.
Instead of the explicit video, Wheeler mentioned that the Asheville airport gun incident was a more impactful blow against Cawthorn.
“I believe that established our reputation” as a reliable source, he mentioned.
