According to the weekly bulletin from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) on April 29, Wells Fargo is at the forefront, but various significant banks will be shutting down branches in the upcoming months.

According to the latest bulletin, Wells Fargo intends to close an extra 17 branches in Texas, New Jersey, Virginia, Connecticut, Utah, Nevada, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Georgia, Arizona, and Washington.

Banks are obligated to give a minimum of 90-day notice prior to closing, as these branches were identified at the end of April, with the earliest possible closure date being in late July, in accordance with OCC guidelines.

The bank has notified the agency about the closure of approximately 100 branches since early February. The OCC has been informed by Wells Fargo about the closure of dozens of branches over the past several months.

The evaluation of our branch network is constantly being conducted due to the influence of market factors and the growth of digital banking. Customers are increasingly using our diverse digital capabilities for their banking needs, leading to a rise in transactions conducted outside of the physical branch. A company spokesperson previously discussed the bank’s branch strategy, emphasizing the continued significance of branches in our customer service approach.

Wells Fargo recently announced closures to reach out to Best Life. They did not provide any additional comments beyond the previously provided statement.

The company spokesperson stated that the Northridge and Neck Great branches were consolidated and relocated to a nearby site in the same neighborhood. The locations in Flushing, California, and New York, as well as Neck Great and Flushing, are closing. In addition, the OCC informed JPMorgan Chase of their plans to close three branches, as reported in the April 29th Bulletin. However, Wells Fargo is not the only bank closing branches.

Chase, having nearly 5,000 branch establishments, achieved the distinction of being the inaugural and solitary financial institution to possess branches in all 48 contiguous states in 2021. Our efforts to establish new branches persist. According to the spokesperson, the majority of branch shutdowns occur within a distance of two miles from the nearest branch. “Occasionally, our pursuit to enhance our branch network involves merging or shuttering branches. We maintain our commitment to investing in our branch network to provide our cherished customers with enjoyable experiences and beloved services.”

The Fidelity Bank and the Bank of America, along with other major banks, are closing branches in Kansas, specifically Wichita, and in New Jersey, including Hoboken. Additionally, individual locations will be closing in the coming months, as stated in the bulletin.

Santander is also closing down locations this summer, shutting down 17 branches in Massachusetts, as stated in the April 22 weekly bulletin.

We are reimagining the customer and employee experience by increasing our digital investment and refining our branch footprint, aligning with the evolving needs of our customers. Many industries, including Santander, have noticed that our customers’ preferences have changed, resulting in more customers choosing to bank with us online, as stated previously in a company statement by Santander Life Best.

On July 21, the establishments will close, as PNC verified in a statement previously given to Best Life. According to the April 22 OCC bulletin, the financial institution is closing an additional 30 offices in seven states–Virginia, Texas, Maryland, Ohio, Florida, Alabama, and Illinois–increasing the extent of PNC’s shutdowns.

The spokesperson from PNC mentioned that the choice to shut down the extra 30 branches was taken after a thorough evaluation.

The spokesperson stated, “We are confident that we can meet or exceed the needs of our customers by offering various banking methods in addition to nearby branch locations, and we are committed to delivering on our purpose of moving forward financially.”

According to calculations by the Pittsburgh Business Times, PNC is closing more than 200 establishments this year in total.
