Meyers Leonard seeks return to NBA post-antisemitic slur

Meyers Leonard, a former NBA first-round draft pick who hasn’t played in the league since 2021, is expected to play in the NBA again. However, ESPN told him that there are “no excuses” for what he did after using an antisemitic slur during a livestream video of a game.

During the interview that was broadcasted on Tuesday, Leonard expressed to Jeremy Schaap of “Outside the Lines,” “I have a sensation of being trapped in a nightmarish situation.” “Furthermore, I am fully aware that I committed a significant error.” “There is no trace of animosity within me.”

Due to the process, he mentioned experiencing nerve impairment and went through ankle surgery in April 2021. While participating in a live online broadcast while gaming, he faced suspension in March 2021 for employing an anti-Jewish derogatory remark. Leonard’s most recent NBA appearance took place in January 2021.

During the past two seasons, he devoted time to recuperating from surgeries on his shoulder and ankle, all while being absent from the realm of professional basketball.

During the COVID-19-delayed 2019-20 season, he gained notoriety in the Orlando bubble by kneeling during the national anthem to draw attention to the issue of police brutality. Leonard has played in 447 NBA games, averaging 3.9 rebounds and 5.6 points.

In 2020, Blake Jacob’s shooting and Floyd George’s murder deeply saddened me as a person of color. In addition, I felt a great deal of pain when I learned that his brother had served in the military, which he mentioned in a later piece for ESPN’s Andscape.

Currently at the age of 30, Leonard recently trained with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Leonard, who acknowledged the prevalence of such language in a significant percentage of video gaming, admitted that he was unaware of the historical significance or connotation of the antisemitic slur he uttered during his conversation with Schaap.

“I am not evading this, but I was unaware of its occurrence,” he supplemented. “And regrettably, lack of knowledge is an indisputable reality. There are absolutely no justifications for the events that transpired on that day.”

According to the Anti-Defamation League, the number of antisemitic incidents in the U.S. Reached an unprecedented level of 2,717 in 2021 – equating to an average of over seven incidents per day and a 34% rise compared to the previous year. This marks the highest number of recorded antisemitic incidents since the ADL started monitoring them in 1979.

He was subsequently released by the Oklahoma City which traded him to Miami after the incident. Additionally, he was fined $50,000. Furthermore, he was suspended by the NBA for a week and publicly apologized on Instagram after making a slur.

Schaap was informed, “To be honest, I felt like everything I had worked for and my entire life had just been destroyed.” “I suppose people had every right to make assumptions about me. People in the media were commenting on this. I do understand, though.”

“I stated, you should go take care of this and to demonstrate to others what you truly feel.”

“I believed that it would be simpler to be deceased rather than confront the recent events, as I desire everyone to have a positive opinion of me. I hold no animosity towards anyone. I would never purposefully cause harm to another,” he appended.

Described as a 2018 movie on Amazon that contained anti-Jewish false information, it included a hyperlink, which Kyrie Irving tweeted and posted as an Instagram story, and Leonard was questioned about it.

He expressed the importance of individuals acquiring a comprehensive understanding of history and emphasized the need for increased education. He also stressed that antisemitism is a genuine issue, and he personally feels the responsibility to speak up about it.

Leonard expressed, “It is ideal to mend any unfortunate occurrences, regrettably, in my perspective, when attempting to clarify, it is preferable if you did not mean to harm someone or in case you made an error or said something that could potentially.”

Leonard Meyers, in 2021, has dedicated considerable effort and time to understand the impact of his comment. He has been accountable and has participated in programs to educate himself and share his learnings with the Jewish community. Additionally, he has met with numerous leaders in the Jewish community to further engage and contribute. The NBA spokesperson for Mike Bass stated that his use of an unacceptable and derogatory term was unacceptable.

Leonard specifically noted that he has frequently encountered antisemitism and has sought counseling from two rabbis in South Florida.

If he makes a comeback in an NBA arena, he will need to confront that and be recognized for his actions, but he comprehends.

Schaap informed him, “However, I consistently return to this fundamental principle: Do not surrender. If you possess admirable qualities and exert diligent effort, circumstances will ultimately resolve favorably in life. Moreover, I sincerely hold the conviction in this notion,” he expressed. “I may experience slight trepidation regarding potential comments from others, particularly from an ardent supporter.”
