Notable Alumni
Michael Yiallourides, Exercise Science
Michael Yiallourides graduated from the Department of Kinesiology at Towson University in 2012, majoring in Exercise Science. When he first enrolled at TU, he had little idea about the potential opportunities his degree and major could offer. Reflecting on his experience, Michael mentioned, “What I enjoyed most about the program was the whole curriculum being, for lack of a better term, well-rounded. I learned more about the flexibility of what an Exercise Science degree could turn into.”
After completing his undergraduate studies, Michael pursued a master’s degree in Orthotics & Prosthetics (O&P) at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating in 2015. This specialized program allowed him to become a certified Prosthetist & Orthotist. Presently, Michael works at a private clinic in Essex, New Jersey, where he sees patients for both prosthetics and orthotics. Prosthetics primarily involve prosthetic limbs, particularly for amputees, while orthotics focus on orthopedic bracings.
The most rewarding aspect of Michael’s job is witnessing the impact he makes on his patients. When he is able to provide them with new prostheses, he sees the joy and gratitude on their faces. Being able to give someone the ability to do things they couldn’t do before is an incredibly fulfilling experience for him.
Michael advises students pursuing Kinesiology and Exercise Science at Towson University to gain as much experience as possible. He emphasizes the importance of diversifying one’s experience to build a broader knowledge base and foundation for their future careers. Michael’s best advice for students is to seek in-person experience, as it provides invaluable insights and practical skills.
