Obtaining Copies

You can download it yourself if an image is being displayed. (On the site, only some images are displayed as thumbnails because of rights considerations, but you have access to larger size images outside of the Library of Congress site).

Alternatively, you can buy duplicates of different kinds through the Duplication Services of the Library of Congress.

  • For the majority of publishing needs, if there exists a digital depiction that was created directly from the genuine and possesses the appropriate clarity, then the reproduction number segment mentioned above comprises a reproduction number commencing with LC-DIG… The attributes of the digital depiction are to some extent contingent upon whether it was created from the genuine or an intermediary like a duplicate negative or transparent medium if a digital depiction is being showcased.
  • If there is information listed in the Reproduction Number field above: You can use the reproduction number to purchase a copy from Duplication Services. It will be made from the source listed in the parentheses after the number.

To obtain a copy that displays color or tint, please request it by providing the catalog record (“About This Item”) and mentioning the Call Number mentioned above. In case only black-and-white (“b&w”) sources are available, you can usually buy a high-quality colored copy of the original.

  • Your inquiry must contain the catalog entry (“About This Item”) and mention the Call Number stated above. In most cases, you can obtain a high-quality replica through Duplication Services if there is no data provided in the Reproduction Number category above.
  • Price catalogs, contact details, and purchase documents can be found on the Duplication Services website.

    Access to Originals

If you need to determine whether you need to fill out a slip and call a number to view the original item(s), a digital image of a form is often available as a surrogate in the Reading Room for Photographs and Prints.

  • Has the item been digitized? (A small thumbnail image will be visible on the left.)

  • Yes, the item is digitized. Please use the digital image in preference to requesting the original. All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights restrictions. As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage. They are also easier to see online where they are presented as positive images.)
  • No, the item is not digitalized. Kindly proceed to number 2.
  • Are the Access Advisory or Call Number fields above indicating the presence of a non-digital substitute, such as microfilm or copy prints?

  • Yes, another surrogate exists. Reference staff can direct you to this surrogate.
  • No, there is no other substitute available. Please proceed to number 3.
  • If you need advice on how to fill out a slip to call for an item that can be served later on the same day or for future reference, staff members can provide guidance. In many cases, originals can be served within a few minutes. If you are unable to see another surrogate or a thumbnail image in the Reading Room Photographs and Prints, please let us know.
  • To contact the Reference staff in the Prints and Photographs Reading Room, please dial 3 on 202-707-6394 between 8:30 and 5:00, or feel free to call the reading room directly or utilize our Ask A Librarian service.
