Accessing original items, as well as citing, publishing, and reproducing material, is necessary for obtaining information about the collection, restrictions, and rights of the Historic American Buildings Survey/ Historic American Engineering Record/ Historic American Landscapes Survey.
Obtaining Copies
You can download it yourself if an image is being displayed. (On the site, only some images are displayed as thumbnails because you have to access larger-sized images due to rights considerations of the Library of Congress).
Alternatively, you have the option to buy duplicates of different kinds through Library of Congress Duplication Services.
To obtain a copy, please include the catalog record (“About This Item”) and reference the Call Number provided above. If you prefer a colored or shaded copy, please note that the original may have such features. In cases where only black-and-white (“b&w”) sources are mentioned, it is usually possible to purchase a high-quality colored copy of the original.
Price catalogs, contact details, and purchase documents are accessible on the Duplication Services website.
Access to Originals
In some cases, a surrogate image (which can be in the form of microfilm, print copy, or digital format) is often available. To determine whether you need to fill out a slip and call out the original item(s) to view, please follow the steps below in the Reading Room for Photographs and Prints.
Has the item been digitized? (A small thumbnail image will be visible on the left.)
Do the Access Advisory or Call Number fields above indicate that a non-digital substitute exists, such as microfilm or duplicate prints?
Please contact the Reference staff in the Reading Room for Photographs and Prints by dialing 3 and 202-707-6394 at 8:30 and 5:00 to ask for assistance from Librarian A.
