Recycling Collection | City of Takoma Park

As a curbside collection service, residential recycling collection is provided once a week. The Department of Public Works gathers household recycling from every single family residence and the majority of small apartment complexes in the City of Takoma Park.

Important Recycling Collection Information

  • The recycling collection schedule is modified when the schedule is established due to a holiday, and the Holiday Collection Schedule page outlines the manner in which the schedule is susceptible to holiday modifications.
  • The recycling collection service starts at 6:30 AM.
  • Recycling should be placed in recycling containers the evening before your household’s scheduled collection day.
  • Bottles, containers, and containers should be placed together in recycling bins.
  • Rinse or wash items before putting them in the recycling container.
  • Paper should be bundled in a paper bag or tied with string before being placed beside or in recycling bins or trucks to prevent it from blowing out.
  • Detailed information regarding what can and cannot be recycled in Takoma Park is accessible below.

Public Works offers electronic waste and CFL bulbs collection directly at the Public Works Facility. Fluorescent tubes are not accepted, only the “pigtail”/spiral style. Additionally, Public Works provides CFL bulb and electronics recycling services.

    Recycling Composition Study 2021

The scope of the project included analyzing one of the City’s four recycling routes and manually separating the materials into categories, sorting a total of 8,448 pounds of different groupings. In November, the Maryland Environmental Service commissioned the Department of Public Works to perform a recycling composition study to determine the extent of non-recyclable and contaminated items in the City’s recycling, as well as to identify the materials that residents of the City recycle.

Here are some key points from the complete research:

  • Out of the 8,448 pounds of material, 7,919 pounds or 94% comprised of recyclable materials that met the
  • The level of contamination at 6% is considerably lower than the average contamination rate of 17% in the industry.
  • The average of the sector adheres to this. Glass accounted for the second highest proportion, amounting to 23%. Around 67% of the materials that could be recycled consisted of paper and cardboard.
  • MES suggests that the City focus on reducing the amount of film plastics, clamshells and non-recyclable paper to further reduce contamination rates.
  • Clamshells can be taken to the Montgomery County Transfer Station for recycling. Clamshells that can be recycled are not accepted for the City’s curbside recycling program because they pose challenges for the recycling facility in terms of processing and sorting accurately.
  • What Can Be Recycled in Takoma Park

Hazardous household waste should be safely disposed of during our annual Day Drop-off, or it should be brought to the Public Day, or it should be thrown out during Park’s Takoma Use. If something can be recycled, check out Wizard Waste at Park’s Takoma to find out where it can be sorted.
