Romance Tropes: Friends to Lovers

Writing a compelling story about lovers transitioning into friends, or even from lovers to enemies, is often easier said than done. It’s a beloved trope in the world of romance, as it makes us feel good, warms our hearts, and creates a cozy atmosphere.

The central arc of the story is the big reveal that something happens to make them fall in love and start as friends, with the main characters being revealed as friends-to-lovers.

So why aren’t they together yet?

When beginning a romance novel, I often request for the main characters to be kept separated. This is the initial query I have in mind.

There are few main possibilities in the story, where lovers transition into friends. (Feel free to drop a comment on this blog post if you have more thoughts!)

  • Either one or both of the characters have not yet recognized their emotions for the other.
  • Either one or both of the characters are secretly in love but believe their affection is unreciprocated.
  • One or both of the individuals do not want to jeopardize the friendship.
  • One or both of the individuals have not publicly identified as queer yet.
  • Friends are the ones who exclusively point at this, and they are the characters with whom we start the story, such as. They are worried about what will happen if they declare themselves or come to terms with their own feelings, and these circumstances leave us with a novel romance beginning in a state of uncertainty.

I find it tricky to use tools like novels to heighten the proximity of characters in our bonds. This is an issue that I find in other romance novels with a story of friends-to-lovers.

Since it is likely that they have already accomplished that, one cannot simply put them together in a hotel room or a tent. In a friends-to-lovers narrative, our characters most likely have a strong connection. They have likely spent ample time in each other’s company.

24/7, the other characters are probably thinking about each other. If you start thinking about them, you’re probably still thinking good thoughts about them and not bad thoughts, “writes Waldon. You don’t want to have thoughts about them like to have “writes Waldon. In “How to Write a Romance Lovers-to-Friends,” Waldon Lacie writes that it gives you some extent of freedom to run wild with the characters when you’re addicted to lovers-to-enemies. We also don’t likely have main characters fixating on each other in a way that we would in a lovers-to-enemies story.

Maybe, in this story of lovers-to-friends, there is a central event that acts as a catalyst to change the friendship beyond the normal lines of that friendship and above. Maybe she invites her best friend, who is single, and maybe she wins tickets for a romantic weekend getaway.

Seldom creates a captivating narrative, as warm companions gradually and unremarkably develop romantic feelings. In order to infuse excitement into a friends-to-lovers story, a pivotal triggering incident must occur.

Lattes and Legends became successful because two characters, who gradually became friends while working together in a cozy coffee shop during the fall, helped each other and loved the peaceful and quiet atmosphere.

Additionally crucial to the narrative is the catalyst for the relationship, and ensure that your main storyline aligns with the romantic trajectory.

How does the romantic and sexual tension change over the course of the story?

Primarily only a platonic relationship at first, but our characters should have great chemistry. The plotline might not start with a strong sexual tension, but rather with lovers transitioning into friends.

In order for us to fully grasp and accept the development, it is crucial that we witness and have faith in the growth—they cannot simply transition from being friends to lovers. As the main storyline compels the relationship to transform, it is vital for us to observe this transformation in the way the characters interact with one another.

I think it’s interesting how a relationship can evolve from banter and great chemistry between characters, starting from the beginning. The book convincingly increases tension throughout, until it breaks the arc of lovers-to-friends, which is a struggle that many people can relate to.

The centerpiece of the narrative revolves around the affection and yearning, which is crucial to portray to your readers in a mild and gradual progression from friendship to romantic partners. It is important for us to establish the characters’ genuine affection for each other, while it is not necessary for romance novels to include explicit intimate encounters. Frankly speaking, I believe this holds even more significance in a subdued and subtle romance.

How are you convincing your readers that your characters are better as partners than friends?

Disheartening and uncooperative is the notion that a romantic partnership surpasses a platonic one, while a strong companionship is truly remarkable. Your characters already share a significant bond in a tale of friends evolving into lovers.

Why were the characters in this story better as romantic partners but good as friends? Therefore, we need a reason why. How does a romantic relationship improve their lives when friendship was not enough for them and their characters’ lives were lacking beforehand?

Why are you writing a novel about a zany story instead of a romance, when the premise for your friends-to-lovers story is at the heart of your central question? You’ll figure out your answer and be well on your way.
