The actor Michael Richards, known better as Kramer Cosmo in the long-running TV show Seinfeld, has apologized for a racist outburst that was captured on broadcast and film across the United States.
“Fifty years ago, Richards declares from the stage in the recording, we would have you turned upside down with a damn fork up your buttocks.” Richards, who is 57 years old, became offended when a few black individuals in the audience were conversing during his performance at a comedy club in Los Angeles on Friday.
Richards exclaims, “A derogatory term, behold, there’s an individual of African descent! He’s of African descent! He’s of African descent! He’s of African descent!” “Remove him immediately,” he then proceeds to offend one man with a series of racially offensive terms.
Jerry Seinfeld was interviewing David Letterman, the host, on television on Monday night, after news broke of Richards’ tirade, and he apologized, stating that Richards was not a racist but rather someone who had lost his temper.
Richards expressed profound remorse, stating, “I deeply apologize. I do not hold any racist beliefs. That’s what makes this situation so absurd.” “Being in a comedy club and losing control to utter such offensive remarks was completely out of character for me. I was performing my comedy routine when I faced heckling, and I reacted poorly, succumbing to anger.”
Richards continued to express that his method of performing might be accountable for the remarks.
He said, “I am a performer, you know.” I work on stage in a very unrestrained manner; I push the limits. I immerse myself in character, it’s spontaneous, and I have a lot of free association.
Some voices could be heard expressing disbelief, and there were continued gasps as attacks from the stage, but some laughed at the comments. The audience became uncertain about whether Richards’ language was extreme, and throughout the tirade, the audience became confused.
One man, called Richards, shouted several comments back at Richards, telling him that the insults were uncalled for and unnecessary.
Another man said: “It’s not funny. That’s why you’re a reject, never had no shows, never had no movies. Seinfeld, that’s it.”.
The following night, Richards continued his rant on stage, leaving several audience members to club their seats before he left. The response seemed to drive Richards further in expressing his anger.
Jamie Masada, the owner of the comedy club, The Laugh Factory, said that the incident at the club was not a personal attack on Richard’s forum but rather a comedy club. He also mentioned that Richard would not perform at the Hollywood club again, given the publicity that followed the incident.
