Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’S splash entry into the 2024 presidential field has drawn renewed attention to his rare voice disorder, spasmodic dysphonia.
President Joe Biden’s approval rating among Democrats, as indicated by a CNN survey conducted in May, stands at 20%, illustrating his level of support within the party.

Here’s what you need to understand about spasmodic dysphonia and its consequences for Kennedy’s campaign.
Spasmodic dysphonia.
According to estimates from the Cleveland Clinic, spasmodic dysphonia is extremely uncommon, impacting one out of every 100,000 individuals.
The disorder affects the muscles in the larynx, which is colloquially known as the voice box, by preventing the normal pattern of speech through vibrating vocal cords.
“As per the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders,” spasmodic dysphonia leads to voice interruptions while talking and can result in a voice that sounds constricted, strained, or airy. “This can greatly hinder a person’s ability to communicate effectively,” spasms might happen with every single word in more serious instances.
The basal ganglia, a region in the brain, can be responsible for abnormal functioning that affects motor coordination, language processing, muscle movement, and can also be linked to drug abuse and strokes.
There is no specific gene for dysphonia spasmodic, a disorder that runs in families, suggesting that genetic mutations might be the cause of familial patterns.
While there is no remedy for the condition, speech therapy and Botox injections are the most prevalent methods of treatment.
Abnormal contractions cause the patient’s voice to become distorted, but these contractions can be reduced by weakening certain sections of the vocal cord muscle fiber using Botox treatments for spasmodic dysphonia. The injections can lead to improved voice functioning within 24 hours. However, as the vocal cords regain their normal strength over several weeks due to the regeneration of new nerve cells, the dysphonia may return.
As per the NIDCD, so far, there have been no comparative studies indicating a singular, optimal treatment. However, the treatment approaches vary for every patient, and in extreme instances, surgery might be considered.
Kennedy’s diagnosis.
Videos documenting the chronological development of RFK Jr.’S public appearances demonstrate that his vocal tone started to transform in the late 1990s.
During a 2007 interview, which is often referred to as the initial instance where he openly talked about his condition, Kennedy informed Oprah Winfrey that his disorder only became apparent to him around the age of 43. Although it was not physically agonizing, he mentioned that speaking required considerable exertion.
Kennedy also said that he had obtained treatments of Botox for his disorder, but he still hadn’t gotten the right dose of medication from the Medicine School at Stanford University. It is important to note that each patient requires a different amount of Botox, and the treatment needed can vary from patient to patient.
In 1986, Kennedy faced accusations of possessing heroin, during which period he enrolled in a rehabilitation program that he described as “remarkable” in treating his dependence. Kennedy also candidly shared with Winfrey his journey towards overcoming drug addiction, which he detailed as commencing “shortly after” his father’s assassination in 1968.
In the late ’60s and early ’70s, Kennedy informed Winfrey that none of us had a full understanding of the detrimental effects of drugs.
It is not possible to offer a more definitive explanation of the specific details of Kennedy’s condition without being able to examine his medical records, which would include brain images such as radiographic images. However, there have been documented connections between heroin misuse and damage to the basal ganglia.
Campaign implications.
Achievement on the political campaign path is a crucial marker of a candidate’s expression. Some analysts attribute the lack of female representation in elected positions as a factor contributing to their high-pitched voices, however, the vocal tone affects the effectiveness of both male and female candidates.
An article published in 2015 in Political Psychology found that both male and female voters have a greater preference for lower-pitched voices in elections and scientific environments.

On the new media platform, RFK Jr.’S uncle is positioned for triumph mainly due to his impressive appearance and articulate manner during the notorious inaugural television debate in 1960 involving JFK and Richard Nixon. Nixon, who seemed and sounded unwell after recently leaving the hospital, was at a disadvantage. Even though intonation might not be a decisive factor, the robustness and vitality of one’s voice can influence public sentiment.
According to the survey conducted by CNN, merely 12% of potential Kennedy voters express their endorsement for his policy views. Among those who have indicated their backing for RFK Jr.’S campaign, 20% back him primarily due to the Kennedy family name, aspiring that he will uphold the heritage of his father and uncle.
