    Timeline for the Silent Patient

Theo is a traditional untrustworthy storyteller.

Theo’s narration alternates between the events that occurred six years ago and the present. The reader is aware that something secretive and difficult to grasp is happening. Kathy discovers that Theo had cheated on her in the past. She breaks into their house and follows him, eventually discovering his affair with his lover.

Alicia is making attempts to talk to Theo for the second time. When Alicia feels like someone is watching her, she thinks that he is cheating on her and that his obsession is with his wife, Theo’s first. There are actually two timelines in the book.

    Six Years Ago

Alicia selects Gabriel. Theo presents Gabriel with the option to eliminate either him or Alicia. Subsequently, Alicia is informed by her neighbor. Alicia observes him and begins to hover around Gabriel and her own residence. He trails her and witnesses her together with Gabriel. Theo discovers that his spouse is engaging in infidelity.

Gabriel is killed and Alicia is admitted to the Grove, a mental health facility.

    Six years later

In order to make Alicia speak and submit an application, it is suggested that he seeks advice regarding a particular case. Mariana, a character from The Maidens, informs him about the opportunity available at the Grove. This is the moment where the paths of the two narratives converge, assuming you have already read Alex Michaelides’ novel, The Maidens.

Theo gets a job at Grove, and he talks to Alicia and hands her the journal (excluding the final important pages).

However, he soon becomes aware that she may identify him, thus he administers morphine to her, inducing a comatose state.

The missing journal pages are discovered at a later time (specifically during winter, when Theo has two meetings with Mariana in October and February, leading to uncertainty about the duration that has elapsed).

Finally, Alicia has the opportunity to share her perspective, and the revelation of Theo’s participation in the offense unfolds.

Please examine my post without divulging any spoilers about the common characters and settings in both The Silent Patient and The Maidens!

Plot Summary of The Silent Patient

The authorities were contacted when gunshots were detected at their residence by a nearby resident, half a decade ago. Gabriel Berenson, a professional photographer specializing in fashion, was wedded to Alicia, a talented artist.

Alicia’s fingerprints were found on the gun, and she was the only person with the body. Alicia had cuts on her wrists and was completely soaked in blood. Gabriel, who was discovered tied to a chair, had been fatally shot.

After the passing of her husband, Alicia chose to remain quiet for the remainder of her existence. The sole means of communication available to Alicia following the completion of the legal proceedings was via a self-portrait she titled Alcestis.

Alicia was committed to the psychiatric hospital in London’s Grove, and Diomedes Lazarus, a renowned forensic psychiatrist, argued at Alicia’s trial that she was clinically insane.

Faber Theo, a forensic psychotherapist, knows that he must apply for the job he wants, as he grew up with an abusive father and attempted suicide but was saved by therapy.

Theo meets Alicia, a patient who refuses to speak and repeatedly engages in self-harming incidents, as indicated by the notes in Alicia’s case.

Theo talks to Diomedes about modifying Alicia’s medication. He believes that she is excessively medicated to have a conversation with him.

Alicia also suffers from mental illness and worries. She reflects on her childhood through Alicia’s diary, where she committed suicide by driving her car.

Theo visits Alicia once again and she attacks him. Diomedes allows him a duration of six weeks to convince her to participate in therapy.

Theo returns to his residence and discovers emails from a different gentleman on his spouse Kathy’s computer.

Kathy departs in order to address Theo. Theo, who is emotionally inaccessible and distant, is someone who seeks to recreate Kathy’s childhood relationship. Ruth’s therapist also accompanies Theo in his journey.

Theo approaches Elif to discuss her encounter with Alicia. Elif brings up the fact that she questioned Alicia about the justification for her partner’s actions.

Jean-Felix tells Theo that Alicia should talk to the owner of Alicia’s gallery, Felix-Jean, and Theo says that Alicia should try to kill herself before killing Gabriel. Jean-Felix says that Gabriel and Alicia were happy and that Alicia hated Gabriel. Max tells Theo that Gabriel is Alicia’s brother.

Gabriel agrees to have a child with Alicia. Max thinks Gabriel is jealous. Max accuses Gabriel of kissing Alicia. She hates that Gabriel keeps a gun. She dislikes Alicia’s diary. Output: Gabriel agrees to have a child with Alicia. Max believes Gabriel is envious. Max accuses Gabriel of smooching Alicia. She despises that Gabriel possesses a firearm. She detests Alicia’s journal.

Theo rides the train to Cambridge and discovers the Victorian residence by the river where Alicia was raised.

Alicia’s father, Paul, committed suicide a few years ago, and Alicia’s mother stayed with him until her own suicide. After their deaths, Alicia moved in with her cousin, Paul, who says that he moved in with Alicia and her mother.

Alicia showcases paintings that hint at Jean-Felix to Theo. Alcestis, including some of Alicia’s artwork, impresses him. Gabriel is unaware of Jean-Felix’s existence, but Alicia has been acquainted with him for years. Theo visits Alicia’s gallery.

Alicia reveals in her diary that she wanted to leave Paul because he borrowed money from Cambridge to pay off his gambling debts.

Jean-Felix provides Theo with her art materials and agrees to Theo’s proposal of allowing Alicia to paint. The protagonist, who was sentenced to death due to her husband’s lack of courage, engages in a conversation with Diomedes about the play Alcestis. Theo and Diomedes converse about the play Alcestis.

At the Grove, Alicia and Theo evade a blaze – Alicia and Theo are the two individuals that she depicts in an art studio that Theo establishes for her.

Theo tells Alicia that she doesn’t believe Alicia’s former neighbor Barbie comes to the grove. She was seeing a doctor and the doctor doesn’t believe that Alicia’s husband killed her.

The authorities disregarded Barbie’s statement about Alicia sending her a picture of the individual who was observing Alicia.

Elif informed Alicia that Theo had developed feelings for her following Elif vandalizing her artwork. Alicia retaliated by stabbing Elif in the eye just as Theo appeared at the Grove.

Theo meets up with Alicia, who hands him her diary.

Alicia, who believes Max might be responsible and suspects that he runs through possible scenarios, goes to see a therapist, Dr. West, after she has a breakdown following her father’s death. She is reminded of her father’s death and thinks that she is being followed. She takes a photo of him and sees the man several times following her. Felix-Jean insinuates that she shouldn’t trust Gabriel, and she sees Alcestis as a character who is reborn and dies. She goes to see the play Alcestis with Jean-Felix. She realizes that she has seen a man outside her house, watching her: it is documented in Alicia’s journal.

Alicia claims that he had a fear of history. Christian says that he was a friend of Gabriel and saw Alicia as a favorite. Theo tells Christian that he has read Alicia’s diary. Christian decides that he must speak to Dr. West and reads Theo’s journal.

Theo returns Alicia’s diary to her and assures her that he supports her.

Theo follows closely behind Kathy as she comes across a man with dark hair. He watches attentively as they engage in an intimate encounter in a park.

Alicia’s father expressed that he wished she had died in the accident instead of her mother. Both he and Alicia enjoyed sitting on the rooftop of their house. He claims that she denied giving him the money but confesses to requesting financial assistance from Alicia. Paul encounters Theo.

Uttering “alright,” Alicia eventually speaks. He declares that their counseling sessions will be discontinued unless she complies. Theo convenes with Alicia and informs her that he is aware of her father’s remarks.

In their subsequent meeting, Alicia becomes more talkative. She and Theo stroll in the courtyard, smoking, and she narrates her tale.

The man was tied to a chair with wire. She went to get Gabriel’s gun. She went to get Gabriel’s gun, but the man had it. The man forced her into the house. When she was working in her studio, a man appeared behind her wearing a mask. Gabriel called to say he was coming home late, Alicia says it was the night of the murder.

The individual struck Gabriel with the firearm, rendering him unconscious, and Gabriel returned home. He bound him and forcibly moved Gabriel to a seat. The person fired at him once Gabriel regained awareness, then departed.

Alicia is manipulating Theo’s feelings and Diomedes believes Alicia fabricated the man. The authorities failed to locate Alicia bound and Gabriel was shot five times, rather than six. Theo remains skeptical of Alicia’s narrative.

Theo is once again trailing Kathy, who encounters her romantic partner. Theo follows the man all the way to his residence. He desires to eliminate him.

Theo arrives at work and discovers that Alicia is in a coma. He assumes that she overdosed as he finds a needle mark on her wrist and an empty pill bottle in her room.

Allen, the inspector, states that it took the police a while to respond to the calls about Diomedes and Alicia’s attempted murder. This suggests that he was involved in the incident. Earlier, Alicia informs Diomedes that Christian was lying. Theo claims that Christian is being treated by Alicia. Christian believes that Alicia knows how to obtain drugs, and he is concerned that the drugs he saw in the locked cabinet at Grove will be missing. Diomedes is also worried about Grove.

The Two Storylines Converge: We finally find out who Kathy is sleeping with in The Silent Patient

Facing him directly, she steps out of the house to go to the studio. Kathy, the wife of her lover Theo, observes her through her window.

Alicia is the wife of Kathy’s lover. Kathy is having a relationship with Gabriel Berenson.

Prior to Gabriel’s untimely death, the narrative focuses on Theo’s pursuit of Kathy in a previous timeframe. The book has cunningly deceived us with a clever manipulation of chronology, indeed.

Gabriel deliberately stuck a needle into her wrist and then lied about it. Theo told her the story of Gabriel’s death when she attacked him, which is why she recognized him as the man who killed Gabriel. Theo seems familiar to her: Alicia’s diary.

What Happened the Night Gabriel Died in the Silent Patient?

Theo and Alicia walked out, with Theo untying Alicia. Theo shot at the ceiling, causing Gabriel to believe that Alicia had been killed. Gabriel made the decision for himself. Theo informed Gabriel that he had a choice to make: either his own life or Alicia’s. Alicia begged for her husband’s life. Theo proceeded to tie them together, back to back, and then rendered Gabriel unconscious before tying up Alicia. Based on the entries in Alicia’s diary, on the night that Gabriel died, Theo bound her.

Who Killed Gabriel in The Silent Patient?

After Theo departed, Alicia confesses in her diary to shooting Gabriel. She affirms, “I did not murder Gabriel, Gabriel terminated me. All I performed was pull the trigger.”

After learning that Gabriel had cheated on her, Alicia told Theo to take her father back, instead of telling Theo to kill Gabriel, because she did not want her mother to die.

He can no longer find her diary. He had wished her father, whom Alicia recognized, had killed her. He didn’t know that her husband didn’t love her. I never thought Alicia would shoot her. “I never thought Gabriel would shoot Alicia,” Theo reflects. Theo and Indira are clearing out Alicia’s room.

Theo has been presented with a new employment opportunity in another location. Julian has arrived to inform Theo that the Grove will be closing down. Diomedes has stepped down and an individual named Julian McMahon from NHS Trust has made an appearance.

Discussion about the plot twists and revelations in “The Silent Patient”.

Performed admirably! It was truly ingenious, I must say, as the cunning timeline didn’t bother me at all. I thoroughly enjoyed the unexpected turn in this novel, it was exceptional.

    Okay, I have questions:

Theo is an individual who evidently experiences remorse SIX YEARS AFTERWARD and/or simply cannot let things be!

Perhaps that was his initial chance? Initially, what prompts Theo to wait six years after Gabriel’s assassination to seek employment at the Grove and ascertain if Alicia recollects him?

One knows that no journal knows about one.

However, he emphasizes the puncture mark! Subsequently, he manages to escape without consequence, as the personnel at Grove presume that she obtained and excessively consumed pills. Eventually, he becomes aware that she may identify him, compelling him to eliminate her.

“Did Gabriel shoot Theo, but then attempts to murder Alicia in a case of crime, is always worse than the cover-up?”
