The future is uncertain for the U.S. after crashing out of the Women’s World Cup

The Americans, once considered dominant in the Women’s World Cup, crashed out of the tournament in Sweden on Sunday after a scoreless draw and penalties. It was their earliest exit from the tournament, despite being four-time champions.

In a packed stadium, Brandi Chastain and her teammates from the U.S. Women’s soccer team celebrated their victory over China in the World Cup 1999. The match ended with a thrilling shootout, which resulted in a significantly different outcome than expected, further elevating the team’s global prominence in the sport.

Except for some desperate energy, the U.S. Team appeared uncharacteristically disorganized and timid throughout this World Cup. The two-time defending champions squeaked by in the group stage with just one win against Vietnam and disappointing draws against Portugal and the Netherlands.

The Americans, who have fallen victim to growing parity in women’s soccer, surpassed the expectations of first-timers Morocco and Colombia, as well as teams like Jamaica, while early home sent Brazil and Germany, former powerhouses in the United States.

Crystal Dunn, the defender, expressed, “Many people think that winning 5-0 games in World Cups makes us look good. I believe that the game has seen significant growth.”

As members of the U.S. National women’s team, we should be proud of those days when we fought for the global growth of this game and see that what you’re thinking is that we have always fought for it.

The team is uncertain about its future as it prepares for the next big tournament in Paris next year, after exiting early from the World Cup and winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Coach Vlatko Andonovski is now uncertain about the team’s future with the team.

Alongside the team, he has achieved a record of 51-5-9. Jill Ellis, the coach who guided the United States to consecutive World Cup championships in 2015 and ’19, assumed the position from Andonovski.

Andonovski expressed on Sunday, visibly disturbed, “I never entered the position, never entered the changing room with the mentality that I desired to do something to protect my employment.” “I was consistently concentrated on performing well, executing my duties in the utmost effective way to ready this team for the difficulties they face, and to equip them to represent our nation.”

U.S. Soccer released a concise statement Monday morning.

Once again, we must recognize the importance of working hard and embracing the steps ahead of us. We will conduct a review to identify areas for improvement and determine our next steps, as we always do after a major tournament. We want to express our gratitude to the remarkable efforts of our staff, coaches, and players, as well as the unwavering support of our fans both at home and in the stands. Although we are disappointed, we want to thank everyone for their incredible support throughout our journey at the Women’s World Cup.

Besides facing tougher competition, the United States also grappled with a lack of experience.

The United States brought 14 players to the World Cup who had never participated in the tournament. In fact, 12 of them had never competed in a significant championship.

Following the underwhelming Tokyo Games, the modifications constituted a youth revolution within the United States. Rising stars such as Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman, and 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson became the primary targets of Andonovski’s focus as he nurtured their growth.

In San Jose, midfielder Savannah DeMelo made an appearance as a replacement in a farewell match against Wales before being selected as a starter in the initial two World Cup matches. Prior to being included in the World Cup squad, she had never participated in a national team game.

In the year 2022, U.S. Soccer player Smith had a good start to the tournament with two goals. However, the rest of the match against Vietnam remained scoreless. In the game against Sweden, she missed her penalty attempt along with Kelley O’Hara and Megan Rapinoe.

The team’s only other goal-scorer was co-captain Lindsey Horan, who also scored two goals.

Andonovski stated that it is a significant opportunity for certain inexperienced players, despite the fact that the outcome did not align with our desires. He emphasized that there exists a cohort of players who will leave a lasting impression in the coming years.

Later, when she was fully expected to explain it, she laughed. There was backlash on social media and among pundits following the match, with both Rapinoe’s missed penalty and Andonovski’s tactics being criticized.

Before the tournament started, she had announced that it would be her last World Cup. She had won an Olympic gold medal and two World Cup titles before, and at 38, she was not the same game-changer she used to be. Rapinoe, the outspoken star, was known for her iconic victory in the 2019 World Cup.

With tears in her eyes, Rapinoe expressed, “It has been a privilege.” Representing this nation and being a part of this team, I have cherished deeply and achieved great success. However, it is heartbreaking to acknowledge that this is only the beginning, and I am saddened by the fact that it’s coming to an end.

After the match, Julie Ertz, the defensive player, also stated that it was likely her last time donning the United States jersey.

It was also evident that the United States was lacking a few crucial players.

In June, Becky Sauerbrunn announced that she was unable to participate in the exhibition match in Ireland due to a foot injury she sustained earlier this year. The injury occurred in April and it involved tearing her patella tendon, which made her unable to compete in the tournament as the top scorer for her team, Swanson Mallory.

Catarina Macario, a dynamic forward hailed as one of the future stars of the team, sustained an ACL injury while playing for French club Lyon last year and was unable to fully recuperate within the expected timeframe.

The United States faced its biggest challenge in terms of its identity in the end. It could never summon the same level of self-assurance as previous teams, such as the iconic ’99ers.

Gonna change it’s only. Going to continue, it’s only. Getting better is the game. This game is evolving. I stand still by that. Still hopeful for the future of this team, but still. We failed at this time. We all want to do is able to uphold the legacy that this team deserves.
