WHERE DOES THE IRISH LOOK COME FROM?

Over the past ten thousand years, many different peoples have arrived on the island of Ireland. The genetic history and makeup of the Irish have connections to the region of Galicia in northern Spain, the Basque region, as well as Wales and Scotland. One theory suggests that these individuals, who descended from the survivors of the Spanish Armada (1588) that landed on the west coast of Ireland, were once known as the ‘Black Irish’.

There is little evidence to support the theory that the Irish people, who settled on the west coast of Ireland over a much longer period, may have existed along the Atlantic coast from the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa as an ancient sea trading route. However, it is unlikely that any significant number of Spanish soldiers would have long survived in the war-torn place that Ireland was in the sixteenth century.

The Modern Irish Look

The modern Irish usually have light features – pale blue or green eyes, reddish or brown hair and fair skin with freckles.
